HOMECOMING GAME
Concluding a busy homecoming week filled with traditional campus festivities, the Lion football team entertained a packed crowd at Wiley Hollingsworth Stadium as they played host to the Purple Tornadoes of Parrish. Senior players Hunter O'Mary, Jake Robertson, Joseph Tidwell, Devin Watkins and Jordan Wyma served as team captains for the Lions. Parrish won the coin toss and elected to receive the opening kick.
Aaron Dillard booted the opening kick out of bounds at the 35-yard line giving the Purple Tornadoes offense short field position and three plays later Quarterback Jeremy Piper and his offensive front was setting deep in the Lion red zone at the 6-yard line. Reginald Harris took the hand off from Piper and rushed over right tackle to the end zone giving Parrish an early lead with 10:35 showing on the game clock.  On the PAT attempt, kick by Mason Secrest the Tornadoes were penalized for an illegal procedure requiring a replay on the PAT.  Secrest's kick sailed right on the replay and the score stood 6-0.
Corey Stewart and A. Dillard lined up deep to receive the ensuing kick but the ball rolled out of bounds setting the Lion offense with good field position.  First down brought Dillard with a keeper over right guard to the 41-yard line.  Hunter O'Mary took the hand off on second down and scrambled to Tornado 46-yard line.  Dillard called his own number on first down and scrambled over the left side of the line of scrimmage before cutting back across mid field racing toward the end zone before being caught and brought down from behind by R. Harris at the 5-yard line.  Setting deep in the Tornadoes red zone Stewart got the call to carry the ball picking up 1-yard.  Second down brought O'Mary with the rushing attack but he was met at the goal line for the saving tackle by Brodrick Sanders.  Dillard took the ball to the end zone with a rushing carry straight up the middle to put the Lions on the scoreboard.   The PAT kick by Dillard with David Aldridge holding was perfect and the Lions were on top with 6:54 remaining in the first quarter.
The Lion coaching staff tested the Tornadoes by kicking an on sides kick and Devin Watkins was on the spot snatching the ball out of the air and recovering to give the Lions ball possession at the 40-yard line. Dillard was held for no gain on first down and Stewart was met at the 37-yard line on second down.  Facing third down and 7, Dillard called his own number and again rushed over the right side of the line of scrimmage before cutting back across midfield racing to the 3-yard line before Austin Crowe could make the tackle.  With the snap of the ball, O'Mary was standing straight up in the end zone.  Dillard's kick on the PAT was right down the middle of the uprights and with 4:34 remaining in the first quarter the score stood 14-6 in favor of the Lions.
Proving the offensive battle was to be continued, R. Harris fielded the ensuing kick by O'Mary at the 40-yard line with a fair catch.  The Lion defense held on first down with Dakota Dozier and Jordan Wyma bringing Piper down in the back field for a 2-yard loss.  On second down R. Harris took the hand off and rushed over his right guard for a 5-yard gain.  Facing third down and 7, Piper went to the air attack and connected with Hunter Sharitt who raced to the end zone for the touch down.  On the PAT, Piper handed the ball off to R. Harris who rambled around the right side of the line of scrimmage for the successful two point conversion tying the score with 3:09 remaining in the first quarter of play.
Jackson Freeman's ensuing kick rolled out of bounds to set the Lion offensive front up at the 35-yard line once again.  Rushing attacks by Dillard and Stewart set the Lions up at the 43-yard line facing third down and 2-yards.  O'Mary took the hand off and fought his way up the middle for the needed yardage to give the offense another possession.  Stewart rushed around the left side on first down gaining for a 4-yard gain and Dillard took the ball another 2-yards to set up third down and 4-yards at the Parrish 49-yard line as the first quarter came to a close.  O'Mary was called on for the needed yardage and he took the ball to the 44-yard line for the first down.  Pounding the ball forward on the ground with the rushing attack, Stewart, Dillard and O'Mary advanced the ball down field reaching the Tornadoes red zone with a first down at the 19-yard line.  Dillard rushed over the left side of the line of scrimmage for a 4-yard gain on first down and then rushed over the right side on second down to set up third down and 4. Stewart took the hand off and rambled around the left side line to the 8-yard line before Spencer Piper and R. Harris shoved him out of bounds.  Rushing attacks by Dillard moved the ball to the 2-yard line setting up third down and goal.  Once again O'Mary took the ball to the end zone fighting his way behind blockers for the touchdown.  The PAT kick by Dillard was perfect and the Lions had regained the lead 21-14 with 4:35 showing on the game clock.
Dillard's ensuing kick sailed high and was fielded by a fair catch at the 34-yard line by Marcus Harris.  On first down, Jermichael Harris took the hand off and was met immediately by Dillard for the stop and a 2-yard loss.  J. Piper with a keeper was stopped just short of the first down marker by Dakota Harris and Stewart to bring up third down and inches. R. Harris took the hand off and scrambled around the right side of the line of scrimmage across mid field to the Lion 35-yard line where David Aldridge made the saving tackle.  On first down, R. Harris continued his rushing attack moving the ball deep down field to the 3-yard line before Dillard could make the stop.  First down brought A. Crowe with the rushing attempt up the middle but D. Dozier and Landon Miller made the stop after a 1-yard gain.  D. Dozier was on the spot for the second down stop making initial contact with R. Harris behind the line of scrimmage and bringing him down at the original line setting up third down.  Determined to reach the end zone, R. Harris took the hand off once again and walked into the end zone from the left side of the line of scrimmage.  Freeman's kick on the PAT was good and with 1:23 remaining in the first half the score stood tied 21-21.
Freeman's ensuing kick sailed deep into the end zone setting the Lions up at their 20-yard line.  Dillard picked up seven yards on first down with a rush around the right side line before being forced out of bounds by H. Harris.  Dillard again carried the ball on second down and rushed around the left side line to the 32-yard line for the first down.  With a new possession, the Lions stuck with Dillard on the rushing attack and he reached the 39-yard line to set up second down and 3.  O'Mary was called up on for the short yardage and rushed up field to the 42-yard line for the first down.  Dillard continued his rushing attack on first down but was forced out of bounds after a 1-yard gain. Stewart got the call on second down and rushed around the right side lines before being forced out of bounds at the Tornadoes 49-yard line with 29.5 seconds remaining in the first half.  O'Mary took the hand off and rushed up the middle to the Tornado 47-yard line where Jaylon Gaines made the tackle.  With a new set of downs and time running off the clock quickly the Lions went to the air attack with Dillard attempting a pass over the middle to Aldridge, but Kelly Fraley was on coverage for Parrish as the pass fell incomplete with .7 seconds remaining. Dillard took the ball over right tackle for an 8-yard gain on second down but time expired on the first half leaving the score tied at 21-21.
Following the half time break Stewart and Dillard lined up deep to receive the second half opening kick.  Freeman's kick came to a rolling stop with Aldridge on cover for the Lions at the 34-yard line.  First down brought Stewart with the rushing carry but he was met behind the line for the tackle by Zohn Anderson. Dillard called his own number on second down rushing around the left side line before cutting back inside and following his blockers down field to the Tornadoes 10-yard line where Gaines made the saving stop from behind.  O'Mary took the ball deeper on first down after a 3-yard gain.  On second down, Christopher Wilson and a host of angry defenders stopped Dillard at the line of scrimmage for no gain.  Facing third down and goal from the 7-yard line O'Mary was called on to move the ball but he too was met at the line of scrimmage for no gain.  The Lions found themselves setting deep inside the red zone facing fourth down and goal from the 7-yard line with the rushing attack being shut down.  Dillard faked the hand-off to O'Mary and found Aldridge all alone in the end zone for the score with 8:10 showing on the clock.  The Tornadoes jumped off sides on the PAT kick moving the ball to the 2-yard line and giving the Lions an opportunity to go for a two point conversion on the replay of the PAT.  Dillard rushed to the end zone on the replay and Hubbertville had the lead 29-21.
Dillard's ensuing kick rolled out of bounds to give the offensive Tornadoes field position at their own 40-yard line. On first down A. Crowe was met by O'Mary and Dillard for no gain.  Second down brought a pass from Piper to Zohn Anderson but the ball was overthrown to set up third down and 10.  Not giving up on the air attack Piper connected with J. Harris who raced untouched to the end zone.  The PAT brought the Tornadoes with a successful two point conversion after Piper pitched the ball out to A. Crowe who raced into the end zone tying the game at 29-29 with 7:20 remaining in the third quarter.
Stewart and Dillard were lined up deep to field the ensuing kick with Stewart making the reception and fumbling the ball backwards but managing to recover the ball at the 1-yard line.  The Lions found themselves with the worst field position for the offensive front for the night.  O'Mary was met by a host of defenders on first down after a 2-yard gain.  Second down brought O'Mary with the carry once again this time rushing over the left side of the line of scrimmage to the 12-yard line for the first down. On first down, Dillard took the ball around the left side where Z. Anderson and A. Crowe made the stop after a three yard gain.  Second down almost brought complete misery for the Lions as the ball was fumbled on the exchange between Dillard and Stewart but Stewart managed to recover the loss ball leaving the Lions with possession.  After the two yard loss on the fumble the Lions were facing third down and 9-yards at their own 14-yard line.  Dillard caught the Tornado defense off guard and connected thru the air with Aldridge who rambled down field to the 37-yard line for a first down. O'Mary took the hand off up the middle on first down and following the tackle the Tornadoes were penalized for a personal foul moving the ball across mid field to the Parrish 43-yard line.  With a new set of downs, Dillard took the ball round the left side of the line of scrimmage for a two yard gain before J. Piper and S. Piper made the stop. Stewart took the hand off and rushed right before cutting back to the middle following his blockers to the 36-yard line to bring up third down and 3.  O'Mary got the call to carry and pushed his way across the line for a 1-yard gain.  Facing fourth down 2, O'Mary got the call to carry again and pushed his way down field behind blockers to the 28-yard line before Freeman could make the saving tackle. Dillard pushed his way over the left side of the line of scrimmage for a two yard gain bringing up second down and eight at the 26-yard line as the third quarter came to a close.  Sticking with his own number on the rushing attack, Dillard rushed for another 4-yards to the outside and out of bounds at the 22-yard line.  On third down O'Mary took the hand off and raced down field to the 14-yard line  before being tackled for the stop.  O'Mary took the ball deeper on first down for a five yard gain and then on second down was met in the back field by C. Wilson and a host of determined defenders for a 2-yard loss. Dillard took the ball back to the 9-yard line with a rush up the middle but was met by A. Crowe and a host of other defenders setting up fourth down and 5. Following a time out by the Lions, Dillard went to the air attack attempting to connect with Jordan Wyma but interference by the Tornado on coverage brought penalty flags moving the ball to the 5-yard line.  Setting at the 5-yard line with four downs to reach the end zone Dillard took the ball over his right guard on first down for his second rushing touch down of the night.  The PAT kick by Dillard was perfect and with 9:13 remaining in the game the Lions were back on top by the score of 36-29.
Dillard's ensuing on side kick was covered at the Lion 49-yard line setting up excellent field position for the Tornadoes.  First down brought the Lions jumping off sides to give the Tornado offense additional yardage.  Facing first down and 5-yards at the 44-yard line Piper pitched the ball out to A. Crowe but Jordan White and Dillard was there for the stop to bring up second down and 2-yards.  Piper went to the air attack but his pass to R. Harris fell incomplete.  Third down brought R. Harris with the carry around the left side of the line of scrimmage reaching the 37-yard line before Landon Miller and Jordan Wyma could make the stop.  With a new set of downs, J. Piper went back to the air attack but his pass to M. Harris was  incomplete with Stewart on coverage for the Lions.  Facing second down and 10, R. Harris took the hand off and rambled to the 28-yard line for a 9-yard gain before Dakota Dozier could make the tackle.  Sticking with R. Harris on the rushing attack the Tornadoes ball carrier took the hand off and scrambled around the left side of the line of scrimmage but a penalty against the Tornadoes moved the ball back to the 41-yard line setting up third down.  J. Piper went back to the air attack and connected with J. Harris who raced to the 20-yard line before being stopped by Dillard and White.  On first down the Tornadoes were penalized for an illegal procedure moving the ball to the 25-yard line.  On the replay of down R. Harris took the hand off and moved down field but Aldridge made the tackle.  The ball was moved back up field following another penalty against the Tornadoes for an illegal procedure.  Facing first down and 20-yards at the 30-yard line, J. Piper went back to the air attack and connected with J. Harris who raced to the end zone for his second touchdown of the night.  On the PAT attempt, kick by Freeman, the Lions were penalized for an off sides giving the Tornadoes an opportunity to go for a two point conversion with the ball setting on the 2-yard line.  Piper took the ball around the right side of the line of scrimmage attempting to reach the end zone and put the Tornadoes on top for the first time on the evening, but Dillard, Wyma, and Taylor Oden were there to make the stop for the Lions leaving the score in the Lions favor at 36-35 with 5:51 remaining in the game.
Lined up deep for the Lions on the ensuing kick was Jordan.  White fielded the ball at the 10-yard line and raced up field to the 25-yard line where Crowe, R. Harris and a host of Tornadoes made the tackle.  On first down Dillard was met by B. Sanders after a 2-yard gain.  Second down brought O'Mary with the carry but J. Harris met him at the line for the stop after a 1-yard gain.  Facing third down and 7, Dillard connected with Aldridge who raced down the right side line before being knocked out of bounds at the Lion 37-yard line by S. Piper.  A. Crowe and a host of angry defenders met Dillard on first down for the stop after a 1-yard gain.  O'Mary took the hand off and followed Kris Parson, Devin Watkins and Landon Miller for a three yard gain before being brought down for the tackle by Crowe, R. Harris and others.  Facing third down and 6-yards at the 42-yard line, Dillard called his own number and advanced to the Lion 49-yard line before R. Harris and B. Sanders made the tackle.  Sticking with Dillard, the Lion quarterback moved the ball across mid field to the Tornado 35-yard line before A. Crowe managed to chase him down for the tackle saving the touch down.  Dillard continued showing his strength and determination taking the ball around the right side line before cutting back inside and moving the ball to the 27-yard line on first down.  Facing second down and 2-yards, Dillard again took the ball deeper down field with B. Sanders and A. Crowe making the tackle just beyond the 25-yard line.  Facing first down at the 25-yard line Dillard took a knee on the next two snaps allowing time to expire and giving the Lions a hard fought homecoming victory over the visiting Region 5 Parrish Tornadoes.
The Lions will travel to Arley in Winston County on Friday night to take on another Region 5 opponent by visiting the Meek Tigers. Game time is 7pm.
Comments from Coach Harris:
"I'm really proud of the guys for the extra effort that was given tonight.  We had a really tough defeat last week and of course we had our concern that the guys would not play to their ability this week following that loss.  You just never know how they are going to approach the game and play as a team once you have a game like last weeks. We felt our defense would be tested tonight and they were.  With a great offense like Parrish always brings, we had our questions but the guys stood the test and thanks to some big plays and big stops when they had to be made we walked off the field with the win.  Big plays and big stops often determine the out come of a game and we made them tonight.  Homecoming is always an exciting game for our Seniors and I'm glad they can leave here tonight with the victory."
