JUNIOR LIONS FALL TO SOUTH LAMAR STALLIONS
The Hub Junior Lions traveled into Lamar County on Monday night, October 10, 2011, to pay a visit on the Junior Stallions of South Lamar High School.  Team captains for the night were Justin Hancock and Kris Parson.
The opening kick from Justin Cheeks was received at the 22-yard line by Dax Benton who scurried around would be tacklers moving the ball across midfield to the Stallion 45-yard line where he was stopped by Cheeks.  On first down Lion quarterback Austin Palmer connected thru the air on a swing out pass to Benton who gained 4-yards.  Second down brought a hand off to Nathan Young who rushed around the left tackle to bring up what appeared to be just short of the first down marker but the Lions were moved back five yards due to a penalty. However the Lions regained the yardage without snapping the ball as the Stallions were penalized butting the ball back at the 36-yard line to set up third down and 1.  Palmer on a keeper advanced around the left side of the line picking up 6-yards and giving the Lions another set of downs.  First down brought Benton with the rush for a 1-yard pickup.  On second down Palmer rambled around the left side of the line of scrimmage for a 6-yard gain to set up third down and 3.  Third down brought another penalty against the Lions for illegal motion, moving the ball back five yards.  Facing third down and 8, Palmer  pitched the ball out to Gabe Stidham who was met in the backfield by Cheeks to halt the Lion drive.  Facing fourth down McCain Hubbert lined up in the back field and punted the ball away to the Stallions.
After pinning the Stallions deep near the goal line at their own 6-yard line, Stallion quarterback Justin Weathers relied on Hershell Smith to get the ball down field.  First down brought Smith with the carry for a 2-yard gain where Kamron Smith and Parson was on the stop.  Second down brought Smith with the rushing attack again moving the ball to the 14-yard line before Hancock and Mason Drummond could bring him down.  On third down Smith advanced to the 14-yard line where he was met by Parson, Smith and a host of Lion defenders but officials determined enough yardage was gained to move the chains.  Sticking with Smith the Stallions moved the ball to 15-yard line as the first quarter expired.
Starting the second quarter the Stallions were penalized moving the ball back to the 10-yard line to bring up second down and 14.  Smith took the hand off from Weathers and rushed around the right side line where Smith forced him out of bounds at the 43-yard line giving the Stallions another first down.  Weathers on a keeper advanced for 6-yards with Palmer and Jacob Stovall on the stop for the Lions at mid field.  Facing second down and three the Stallions returned the rushing carry to Smith who scrambled around in the back field with Benton making the stop for a 2-yard loss.  Third down brought a penalty flag against the Lions moving the ball to just near the Lion 45-yard line and on the replay of downs, Gillham advanced up the middle for the needed yardage to give the Stallions their first down before being brought down by Palmer and Parson.  With a first down at the Lion 42-yard line Weathers reverted to Smith once again to gain yardage.  First down brought Smith around the left side of the line of scrimmage Smith and Hubbert on the stop.  Second down brought Smith around the right side of the line moving the ball to the 40-yard line where Hancock and Peyton McDonald were on the stop to bring up third down and 6.  Smith was met at the line of scrimmage by Hancock but managed to wrestle his way close to the first down marker.  Facing fourth down and inches Weathers called his own number and advanced up the middle where Parson, Stovall and a host of Lion defenders made the stop at the 28-yard line.  First down brought more of Smith as he rushed over right tackle to the 11-yard line where McDonald and Stidham made the saving tackle.  Weathers attacked up the middle on second down and gained 6-yards with Stidham making the stop for the Lions.  Darren Cox took the hand off from Weathers on second down and rushed over right tackle to the end zone to put the Stallions on the scoreboard.  On the PAT the Stallions elected to attempt a two point conversion and succeeded with Weathers connecting thru the air to Tatum in the end zone.
Cheeks booted the ensuing kick down field to Benton who made the fielding reception at the 21-yard line.  Benton raced up field maneuvering himself around would be tacklers speeding his way across mid field and into Stallion territory but officials determined he had stepped out of bounds at the Stallion 45-yard line.  Palmer lined the offense up but misery struck as the ball was stripped from Palmer and fumbled away on first down.  The Stallion offense took over at the Lion 49-yard line and Smith took the ball for 3-yards with Hubbert and a host of Lions making the stop.  Second down brought more of Smith with Drummond and Stidham on the stop after a 2-yard gain.  Facing third down and 5, Weathers went for the air attack but Smith stepped in front of the would be Stallion receiver intercepting the ball and returning it to the Lion 15-yard line to set up first down for the Hubbertville.  Palmer called his own number on first down and rushed up field for 14-yards before being tackled as time expired on the first half of play.
Smith lined up back to receive the second half opening kick from Hubbert.  Hubbert's kick was fielded at the 28-yard line by Smith and advanced to the 41-yard line where Parson and a host of other defenders made the tackle. First down as well as second down brought more of Smith with Parson, Stovall and Benton ganging up to make the stops. With a new set of downs at the Lion 47-yard line,  Marlowe attacked the defense up the middle but Benton and Stidham made the stop after a 4-yard gain.  Parson continued making his presence on the field known as he burst thru the line of scrimmage and sacked Weathers on second down for a 3-yard loss.  Misery continued for the Stallions as the ball was fumbled on the exchange but recovered by the Stallions to set up fourth down and 7.  Depending on Smith to gain the needed yardage didn't work for the Stallion offense as Stidham and Young made the tackle near the 43-yard line to deny the first down.
The Lion offense took over on downs and Benton took the ball around the right side for a 13-yard gain.  Palmer called his own number on the next snap and rushed around the left side of the line of scrimmage reaching the 39-yard line before Smith could make the tackle.  Facing second down and 6-yards, Palmer once again took the ball further into Stallion territory with a gain of 4-yards and a first down at the Stallion 42-yard line.  Benton moved the ball to the 35-yard line before Smith and a host of Stallions made the tackle.  On second down Palmer was met at the line of scrimmage by a host of defenders to bring up third down and 2.  Young got the call to carry the ball and advanced around the left tackle were Cox made the stop.  The Stallions were penalized for a personal foul and the Lions found themselves setting at the 22-yard line with a first down.  Palmer attempted a connection thru the air to Benton but the ball fell incomplete.  On second down Palmer rushed around the right side on a keeper gaining five yards before Marlowe, Smith and Cox made the tackle.  Facing third down and 5, Palmer took the ball up the middle down inside the 5-yard line as the third quarter of play came to an end.
First down at the 4-yard line brought more misery for the Lions as the ball was fumbled but recovered by Palmer setting up second down and goal at the 6-yard line.  Palmer attempted reaching the end zone by rushing around the left side of the line of scrimmage but was met by a host of defenders to set up third down and goal at the 3-yard line.  Palmer rushed up the middle on third down but was met by Smith and Cox for the stop at the 1-yard line.  Penalty flags were thrown before the snap on fourth down and the Stallions were penalized for jumping off sides moving the ball just out side the goal line.  On the replay Palmer was brought down in the backfield turning the ball over on downs to the Stallions at the 2-yard line.
First down brought Weathers with a keeper up the middle advancing to the 4-yard line.  On second down Smith returned as the ball carrier and was met by Parson for the tackle after a 4-yard gain.  Facing third down and 4, Smith once again got the call and advanced over the line of scrimmage for what appeared to be another first down but the Stallions were penalized for holding moving the ball back to the 8-yard line.  Smith returned as the ball carrier and rushed up field where Young knocked him out of bounds at the 14-yard line.  Hubbert and Parson made the stop on Smith on first down after a 2-yard gain and on second down Hancock and McDonald made the tackle on Smith.  Facing third down and 7-yards Smith got the call to carry the ball again and took the hand off and raced around the right side of the line of scrimmage before finding his seam and cutting back across the middle of the field following his blockers down he left side line to the end zone.  With 3:01 remaining in the game the Stallions were setting comfortably with the lead over the Lions.  The PAT kick by Leaner was good and the score stood 15-0.
Palmer lined up deep and received the ensuing kick from Cheeks at the 21-yard line racing up field to the Lion 43-yard line where Cheeks met him for the tackle.  First down brought Young with the carry for the Lions but he was met after a 1-yard gain by Cheeks for the stop.  Palmer raced up the middle on second down but was met after a 1-yard gain by Cheeks, Cobb and a host of other defenders for the tackle.  Facing third down and 8-yards at the 45-yard line, Palmer went to the air attack connecting on a pass to Benton with Benton turning on full speed racing untouched to the end zone to light up the Lion's side of the score board.  Cheeks burst thru the defensive line and brought Palmer to the ground on the two point conversion attempt leaving the score at 15-6 in favor of the Stallions.
Benton continued his presence on the field by recovering Hubert's on side kick for the Lions at the Stallion 47-yard line.  First down brought Palmer connecting thru the air to Benton once again with Benton scrambling for yardage down field to the 40-yard line before the Stallions could make the stop.  Following the play the ball was moved to the 25-yard line as a personal foul penalty against the Stallions was walked off.  With time running quickly on the Lions, Palmer attempted a pass connection over the middle to Stidham but the ball fell incomplete just beyond Stidham's finger tips.  Second down brought misery for the Lion offense as Palmer was sacked by Cox, Cobb and host to set up third down and 12.  Palmer attempted a swing pass out to Young but the ball was bobbled and fell incomplete to set up fourth down and 12-yards with time running quickly out on the Lions.  Palmer attempted another connection with Stidham but once again the ball fell just short of Stidham's reach and incomplete turning the ball over to the Stallions on downs.
Sticking with Smith on first down the Stallions advanced to the 33-yard line before Hancock, Tre Tranum and Seth Ferguson could make the tackle.  Facing second down and 5-yards time expired giving the Stallions the hard fought victory over the visiting Lions by the score of 15-6.
