HUBBERTVILLE JUNIOR LIONS GET FIRST WIN OVER LYNN BEARS
The Hub Junior Lions traveled to Lynn to take on the Bears on Monday night. The Lions received the opening kick-off with Mason Stidham fielding the ball at the 35-yard line to set up the Lion offense. Vess Benton brought the Lions to the field and on first down called on Dax Benton to carry the ball with a loss of one yard. Second down brought a swing pass from Benton to Benton with Dax picking up 6-yards on the play. Facing third down and 4-yards, Austin Palmer took the hand off and rushed around the left side but lost the ball on the carry with the Bears recovering at the Lion 41-yard line.
First down for the Bears brought McKain Hubbert across the line of scrimmage for the stop in the backfield and a 2-yard loss. On second down the Bears attempted the air attack but Kamron Smith was on coverage for the Lions with the ball falling incomplete. Third down brought another passing attempt but the ball was over thrown to set up fourth down and 12-yards at the 43-yard line. Dax Benton and Austin Palmer lined up to receive the ensuing punt but the ball rolled out of bounds at the 34-yard line.
Once again Vess Benton was brought down for the sack in the back field on first down for a 7-yard loss. On second down V. Benton connected with M. Hubbert in the back field but Hubbert was met and stopped for an additional 6-yard loss. Facing third down and 23-yards, V. Benton on a keeper scrambled up field to the 36-yard line setting up fourth down. M. Hubbert lined up in the back field and punted the ball away with D. Benton making the immediate tackle on the Bear return man. Following the play the Lions were penalized for having 12 players on the field placing the ball at the 44-yard line for the Bears offensive front.
The Bear ball carrier rushed around the right side of the line of scrimmage on first down but was met by M. Hubbert and Kamron Smith for the stop and no gain. Second down brought an incomplete pass and third down brought more misery for the Bears as M. Hubbert broke the intended pass up at the line of scrimmage to set up fourth down and 10-yards. The Bears elected to go for the needed yardage on fourth down but the receiver who made the catch was brought down immediately by Austin Palmer to turn the ball over on downs to the Lions.
D. Benton was met in the back field and brought down for a two yard loss on first down. Second down brought V. Benton with a keeper rushing around the right side of the line of scrimmage and down the right side line racing to the end zone for the first points of the evening. V. Benton crossed the goal line untouched on the 63-yard touchdown run with 1:15 showing on the game clock. The PAT kick by M. Hubbert sailed wide right and the score stood 6-0 in favor of the Hubbertville Junior Lions.
The ensuing kick by M. Hubbert was received at the 28-yard line by the Bears return man and was met by D. Benton for the stop at the 34-yard line. Peyton McDonald was on the spot for the Lions to make the tackle immediately following a pass connection at the Bears 48-yard line on first down. The Bears rusher rattled around the right side of the line of scrimmage dodging would be tacklers with M. Hubbert and K. Smith making the stop for the Lions. Following a penalty against the Lions the Bears were setting at the Lion 45-yard line with a first down. With a new set of downs the Bears quarterback was sacked in the back field by Nathan Young and D. Benton as the first quarter of play came to an end. Facing second down and 15-yards at mid-field the Bear quarterback scrambled around the right side of the line for a 2-yard gain with M. Hubbert and A. Palmer on the stop for the Lions. Third down brought another passing attempt but D. Benton was on coverage for the Lions with the ball falling incomplete. Fourth down brought another attempt to gain the needed yardage by the Bears but N. Young leaped above the offensive line of scrimmage batting the ball to the ground giving the Lions possession on the turn over of downs.
First down brought A. Palmer around the left side of the line of scrimmage for a 3-yard gain. On second down V. Benton was brought down after a scramble in the back field for a large loss of yardage. The Lions were unable to recover on third down and M. Hubbert lined up to punt the ball away. Hubbert's kick was fielded and fumbled but recovered by the Bears at their 25-yard line.
Mason Stidham was on the stop on first down after a large amount of yardage was gained by the Bear rusher who scrambled around the left side of the line of scrimmage and down the left side line with M. Stidham making the saving tackle at the Bears 44-yard line. Second down brought more misery for the Bears offense as the ball was fumbled and recovered by the Lions at the Lion 40-yard line.
Attempting to catch the Bear defense off guard on first down, V. Benton went deep with a pass attempt but the ball was overthrown to Stidham. Second down brought penalty flags against the Lions for delay setting up the offense at the 35-yard line. Benton and Benton regained the penalty yardage after a completed pass moved the ball back to the 35-yard line setting up third down and 10-yards at the 40-yard line. Sticking with the passing attack, V. Benton went air-borne once again and connected with A. Palmer who raced untouched into the end zone but penalty flags against the Lions erased the score and returned the ball to the Lion 35-yard line. Third down brought another penalty against the Lions for delay of game setting up replay of the down at the Lion 30-yard line. Following another penalty the Lions were facing fourth down and an over extended amount of yardage so M. Hubbert lined up and punted the ball away.
The Lynn Bear return man advanced from the 36-yard line to his own 44-yard line where he was met by M. Stidham and Austin Henderson for the stop. Trying the passing attack proved unsuccessful on first down but second down brought a pass completion moving the ball to the Lion 47-yard line. Facing third down and 3-yards the Bears were penalized for movement setting up a replay of downs at the Bear's 48-yard line. G. Stidham made his presence on the field known as he burst across the line of scrimmage and sacked the Bears signal caller to set up fourth down at the Bears 42-yard line. The Bear's punter booted the ball deep with the ball rolling to a dead stop at the Lion 25-yard line. V. Benton called his own number on first down and gained two yards. Second down brought more penalty yardage against the Lions for delay of game. On the replay of downs, A. Palmer took the hand off and scrambled around the right side line and out of bounds as the first half came to a close.
Following the half-time break the Bears had their first offensive chance of moving the ball down field. M. Hubbert's kick sailed to the 35-yard line and took a brunt roll rolling out of bounds. M. Hubbert and K. Smith was on the stop on first down after a 4-yard gain. Second down brought the runner out of the back field for a first down at his own 46-yard line before G. Stidham could make the tackle. A four yard gain by rushing up the middle was accomplished on first down with Jacob Stovall and Tre Tranum on the stop for the Lions. Second down brought another passing attempt but the ball fell incomplete setting up third down and 6-yards at mid-field. Sticking with the passing attack the Bears quarterback connected with his intended receiver who fought his way to the 45-yard line where Justin Hancock and N. Young made the tackle to set up fourth down. Facing fourth down and 1-yard the Bears signal caller called his own number and rushed up the middle to the 35-yard line for another set of downs. Sticking with the rushing attack up the middle the Bears advanced to the 29-yard line where they faced second down and 4-yards. The Lions jumped off-sides moving the chains and giving the Bears another set of downs. With a new set of downs the Bears attempted another pass deep down field but the ball sailed way beyond reach of the receiver for an in-completion. However second down was beneficial for the Bears as once again they went for the pass down field with the reception completed just near the goal line and the receiver crossing into the end zone to light up the Bears side of the score board. Following the two point conversion pass completion in the end zone the Bears had the lead over the visiting Lions by a score of 8-6 with 4:28 remaining in the third quarter of play.
D. Benton and A. Palmer lined up deep to receive the ensuing kick but the ball rolled out of bounds setting the Lion offensive front up at the 38-yard line. With the snap of the ball on first down, V. Benton attacked over the left side of the line of scrimmage and fought off would be tacklers cutting back to the outside and racing down the left side line speeding his way into the end zone. The 62-yard rushing touchdown came with 4:13 remaining in the third quarter and giving the lead back to the visiting Lion team. The two point conversion failed leaving the score 12-8.
M. Hubbert's ensuing kick sailed deep down field to the 24-yard line where it was brought out to the 40-yard line by the receiving Bear player with N. Young and a host of defenders on the stop for the Lions. First down brought D. Benton across the line for the sack and a 5-yard loss. Facing second down and 25-yards the Bears went to the air attack with a connection made advancing the ball to the 34-yard line and bringing up third down and 16-yards. Attempting another pass was unfruitful and the Bears punter lined up to punt the ball away. A. Palmer fielded the punt at the Lion 38-yard line and rushed up field to the 45-yard line where he was brought down by a host of angry Bear defenders.
On first down A. Palmer advanced around the left side of the line of scrimmage for a 6-yard gain.
Second down brought Palmer with the carry once again for a 2-yard loss setting up third down and 6-yards for the Lions. V. Benton went over the middle attempting to connect with a pass to J. Hancock but the ball was overthrown setting up fourth down. M. Hubbert returned to the back field and booted the ball deep down field where the Bear receiver made the reception but bobbled the ball and recovered at the 18-yard line to set the Bear offense up once again.
Running the reverse on first down gave the Bears deep field position but P. McDonald managed to make the saving stop for the Lions at the Lion 47-yard line. With momentum and a new set of downs, the Bears went back up the middle with a rushing carry but G. Stidham and D. Benton were there for the stop and no gain. Second down brought a rushing attack from the back field but after a two yard gain up the middle J. Stovall, A. Henderson, M. Hubbert and a host of defenders made the stop and the third quarter of play came to a close.
Facing third down and 8-yards at the Lion 45-yard line the Bear quarterback went to the passing attack but D. Benton stepped in front of the intended receiver intercepting the ball and returning it down field to the Lions 42-yard line. V. Benton was brought down at the line of scrimmage on first down for no gain. Second down brought A. Palmer with the carry but he was met in the back field for a 3-yard loss. Facing third down and 13-yards, V. Benton turned to the passing attack but the ball was batted down at the line of scrimmage to set up fourth down. M. Hubbert punted the ball away and J. Stovall and K. Smith were on the spot to bring the Bear receiver down immediately for no gained yardage. First down brought a rushing attack up the middle but N. Young and others were there for the stop. On second down the Bears carrier rushed around the right side of the line of scrimmage advancing for a first down at the 47-yard line before J. Hancock could make the tackle. Returning to the air attack the Bears quarterback connected with his receiver who advanced to the 33-yard line for the first down before V. Benton made the stop. P. McDonald stepped up with the next snap of the ball and intercepted the Bears moving the ball back down field. The Lions were penalized on the play for holding following the interception so the ball was moved back to the Lion 20-yard line setting up first down.
First down brought a pass over the middle from V. Benton to N. Young but the ball was bobbled in and out of the hands of Young to set up second down. On second down G. Stidham scooped up the loose ball in the back field and with encouragement from his team mates, coaches and fans scampered his way down field rushing to the end zone for a touchdown. Following a successful two point conversion attack thru the air from Benton to Benton the Lions were building their lead. With 4:13 remaining in the game the Lions were on top 20-8.
The ensuing kick by M. Hubbert was fielded at the 33-yard line where the receiver fell on the ball setting up first down for the Bears. A broken up pass by V. Benton on first down brought more misery for the Bears. On second down a passing attempt was broken up by P. McDonald who was on coverage for the Lions. Sticking with the air attack the receiver was deeply overthrown on third down to set up fourth down and 10-yards. With time running out quickly on the Bears the coaching staff elected to go for the needed yardage and another passing attempt but N. Young made the play for the Lions breaking the pass up at the line of scrimmage and turning the ball over on downs to the Lions at the Bears 36-yard line.
V. Benton on a keeper scrambled around the right side of his line of scrimmage to the 17-yard line for a 19-yard rushing attack on first down. First down brought V. Benton connecting thru the air with J. Hancock who advanced to the 9-yard line setting up second down and 2-yards. Reverting to the passing attack V. Benton attempted a connection with G. Stidham but the ball fell incomplete setting up third down. On third down V. Benton connected with D. Benton in the back field but a 1-yard loss was the end result to bring up fourth down and 3-yards at the 10-yard line. V. Benton went air borne again and attempted a connection with J. Hancock with the Bears being penalized for interference on the play. The Lion offensive front moved to the 5-yard line facing first down and goal with N. Young taking the hand off and rushing up the middle for a 2-yard gain. Second down brought V. Benton down in the back field following a mishandle of the snap. On third down the Lions were penalized for delay of game moving the ball to the 14-yard line. With the replay of downs, V. Benton attempted a connection with N. Young over the middle but the ball fell incomplete to set up fourth down and goal. Once again the Lions were penalized for delay of game moving the ball to the 19-yard line. With the snap of the ball V. Benton once again found himself standing straight up in the end zone after rushing up the middle and down the seam for his third touchdown of the evening. Following a penalty against the Bears on the two point conversion, M. Hubbert was backed up for the re-kick but the ball sailed perfectly thru the up rights and the Lions lead increased to 27-8 with only 1:05 remaining in the game.
Hubbert's ensuing kick was returned by the Bears return man to his own 48-yard line where K. Smith and D. Benton made the stop for the Lion defense. First down brought a passing attempt but the ball fell incomplete. On second down the Bears reverted to the rushing attack with the ball carrier attacking up the middle but G.Stidham and A. Palmer made the tackle setting up third down at mid field. The Bears quarterback went deep down field with a passing attempt on third down but the ball was thrown way too deep for the receiver to make the reception. Fourth down brought another passing attack but G. Stidham once again made the tackle for stop with time ticking away quickly on the clock. With a new set of downs at the Lion 37-yard line the game came to an end as the Bears were unable to return to the line of scrimmage and snap the ball prior to game time expiring.
With the sound of the buzzer the visiting Junior Lions achieved their first victory of the season over the Lynn Bears. The Junior Lions have one more game remaining on this years schedule. Monday, October, 24th the Bears will travel to Bear Creek to visit the Phillips High Junior Bears. Game time is 6:30pm.
