Facing the Red Raiders of Marion County in both teams third Region game of the season on a wet, sloppy and rainy night brought an end to the Lions undefeated season. When the Marion County buses departed from Wiley Hollingsworth Stadium both teams were left with identical records. Marion County had lost earlier in the season to Berry and with the victory over the Lions, both Region 5 teams records remained at 3 - 1. Team Captains for the Lions which are chosen by the players were: Dax Benton, Austin Bourland, McKain Hubbert and Nathan Young. Head Coach Lamar Harris knew the task at hand was going to require a perfect game plan execution but the hosting Lions found themselves digging out of a hole early in the game as Peyton Wates took the hand-off on the first play from scrimmage and raced 52-yards untouched for the early score. The Raiders successfully passed into the end zone on the PAT to quickly put 8 points on the scoreboard. Marion County had won the coin toss and elected to receive the opening possession. Vess Benton's opening kick rolled out of bounds at the Marion County 48-yard line where Aaron Pollard and the Raiders offense wasted little time lighting up the visitor's side of the score board.

Colbey Cole's ensuing kick sailed deep down field with Jordan White making the reception at the 4-yard line were he was down immediately after sliding down making the reception. Lion Quarterback Vess Benton and the offensive front rolled onto the field with Benton calling his own number on first down. With the snap of the ball, Benton advanced over the left side of the line of scrimmage and turned-on his speed to outrun the Red Raider defenders for 96-yard touchdown. Dax Benton's kick on the PAT was perfect and with 11:29 remaining in the first quarter the score stood 8 - 7 in favor of the visitors from Marion County.

Conner Roberts waived off the Lion kick team with a fair-catch on the ensuing kick by D. Benton and Pollard and the Red Raiders offense returned to the field lining up at the 48-yard line once again. On first down, Wates was sacked by Anthony Dillard and Landon Miller for a 1-yard loss. Second down brought Ready Swanigan racing around the right side lines for another quick score with 10:40 showing on the clock. The PAT kick by Braden Pyron was unsuccessful and the score stood 14 - 7.

D. Benton received the ensuing kick by Cole at the 10-yard line and raced down field behind blockers before being chased down from behind by Swanigan at the Raiders 15-yard line. T.J. Pratt was held for no gain on first down and on second down Miller advanced over right guard for a 3-yard gain. Third down stopped the Lions in their tracks as V. Benton was met at the line of scrimmage by Cole and Pollard. Facing fourth down and 7, D. Benton was called upon to attempt a field goal but the effort failed short as the ball sailed outside the uprights turning the possession over to the Red Raiders at their 20-yard line.

First down brought Dakota Dozier and N. Young racing into the backfield where Jared Wallace was brought down for a 6-yard loss. Swanigan got the call to regain the yardage on second down and fought his way to the 40-yard line where M. Hubbert and Young made the stop. The Raiders were penalized on first down moving the ball back to the 32-yard line where Wates took the hand off advancing around the right side with V. Benton on the stop leaving Marion County facing second down and 14. Pollard elected to go to the air attack and connected with Wallace who advanced to the 3-yard line before V. Benton could chase him down for the saving tackle. On first down, Wates was met at the line of scrimmage by Kris Parson and Pratt after a 1-yard gain. Facing second down and goal, Pollard advanced to the end zone for the score. The PAT kick was good leaving the score standing at 21 - 7 with 5:19 on the clock.

D. Benton, A. Palmer and White lined up deep to field the ensuing kick with White advancing the ball from the 9-yard line to the Lion 39-yard line where he stumbled behind his blockers setting the Lion offense up for their third possession on the evening. First down brought V. Benton with a keeper for a 5-yard gain but on second down he was brought down behind the line by Roberts for a 1 yard loss. Pratt got the call to carry on third down but Marvin Thomas and a host of defenders made the stop setting up fourth down and 3 for the Lions. Frustration found the Lions unsettled and a delay of game penalty moved the offense back forcing M. Hubbert to line up in the back field and punt the ball away. Swanigan was down field to receive the punt but the ball rolled out of bounds at the Red Raider 39-yard line.

Once again the Raiders wasted little time converting yardage for the score. On first down Swanigan took the hand-off and raced into the end zone untouched for the touchdown. The PAT attempt was unsuccessful as Devin Marcum and Dozier fought their way across the line of scrimmage for the stop following a mishandle on the snap. With 2:21 remaining in the first quarter of play the score was raising in favor of the visiting Red Raiders 27 - 7.

The Lion offense returned to the field following an 11-yard return by White on the ensuing kick. Dillard gained three yards on first down followed by a gain of 4-yards by Pratt on second down. Third down brought Dillard up the middle with the carry but Demetreck Stewart and Swanigan was on the stop setting up fourth down and inches. Pratt took the hand off and rambled to the 43-yard line to keep the possession alive as the first quarter of play came to a close.

Pratt got the call to carry again on first down advancing five yards and on second down Miller was met at the line of scrimmage by a host of defenders after a two yard gain. Dillard took the ball across mid-field to the Raider 48-yard line where Stewart and Wates made the stop just short of the first down marker. Once again the Lions found themselves facing fourth down and inches. Marvin Thomas made his presence known on the field as he met Pratt stopping the Lions from continuing with the possession.

With the ball being turned over on downs on the Red Raider 49-yard line, Pollard called upon Cole who took the hand off and raced untouched over the left side of the line of scrimmage adding additional points to the visitor's side of the scoreboard. With 9:28 remaining in the first half of play the Red Raiders score increased to 35 - 7 following Swanigan's waltz into the end zone.

Cole's ensuing kick rolled into the end zone for the touchback setting V. Benton and the Lion offense up at the 20-yard line. Miller advanced for an 8-yard gain on first down with Jordan Wallace and others on the stop. Sticking with Miller on the rushing attack was successful in gaining another first down at the 33-yard line. D. Benton took the ball over the right side of the line of scrimmage on first down and was met by Thomas for the stop setting up second down and 8. Miller advanced for an additional four yards but on third down the Lions were penalized for an illegal procedure moving the ball back to the 33-yard line for third down and 9. V. Benton attempted a pass connection with D. Benton but Swanigan knocked the ball away setting up fourth down. M. The Marion County coaches called upon Swanigan to regain the lost yardage and he took the hand-off and raced over the right side of the line of scrimmage for the score. The PAT kick was unsuccessful and the score remained 41 - 7 with 5:32 showing on the first half game clock.

Comments from Coach Lamar Harris: "Obviously our team got taken to the wood-shed tonight and that happened in every faucet of the game. I'm very disappointed in the overall performance of our guys with this individual game. I felt that we were better prepared although I knew it was going to be a hard fought game before we stepped onto the field and that was proven from the opening minutes. We allowed them to move the ball continuously all night long which hurt our game plan right from the start. We couldn't establish our game plan in the first half and that's not the way this team has usually started our games. However that said, we did manage to recover our posture in the second half of the game following a much needed half-time break, but that was a little too late in a game of this magnitude. It just seems that we allowed them to remain one step ahead of us all night long and that's going to hurt your team in the end. Bottom line.... we just got beaten by a very good ball team tonight and we've got some work to do on the practice field. Although it's a loss, we've still got a lot of football ahead and we can't let this game take us away from our ultimate goal. I feel the guys will respond to each other and get back on track in our winning ways to allow us to reach those goals that were set earlier when we started preparations for the season."
