The Hubbertville Junior Lions traveled to Berry on Monday night to face their cross county rivals - the Junior Wildcats. Representing the Lions at center field as team Captains were: Dylan Marcum-Pollard, Brett Wright and Lathan Holiday. The Wildcats were represented by: Walt Bowling, Jeremiah Gann, Troy Locke, and Dalton Medders. The Wildcats won the coin toss and elected to receive.

 

Holiday and the Lion kicking team quickly took the field and with Holiday's kick down field the game got underway. Demarcus Johnson fielded the kick at the 22-yard line and was brought down at the Berry 37-yard line by Tre Tranum and Ethan McCluskey. On first down Holiday made his way into the backfield sacking James Raines for a 5-yard loss. Second down brought a fumble on the exchange but the Wildcats managed to recover the loose ball at their 31-yard line. Facing third down and 16, D. Johnson took the hand off from Raines but was met immediately by Tranum, John Upton and a host of other Lion defenders for the stop in the backfield. D. Johnson dropped back and punted the ball away to the Lions on fourth down with Caleb Palmer making the reception at the 39-yard line advancing across mid-field before being tackled. The Lions were penalized for an illegal block in the back moving the ball back to their own 42-yard line.

 

Ethan Nichols led the Lion offense to the line of scrimmage and on first down Mason Stidham took the pitch-out around the right side of the line of scrimmage where he was met by Ethan Franklin and Tyrone Foster for the stop after a 3-yard gain. Second down brought Upton up the middle with the carry but Foster and Alex Jones were on the spot for the stop. On third down the ball was fumbled on the snap but Tranum made the saving recovery for the Lions setting up fourth down and 7. Holiday reverted to the backfield to punt the ball away but once again the ball was fumbled with the Wildcats recovering at the Lion 38-yard line.

 

Ethan Franklin took the hand-off on first down and scrambled his way around the right side of the line where Upton made the saving tackle at the 10-yard line. D. Johnson rushed up the middle for a 6-yard gain on first down putting the Wildcats deeper into the Lions red zone. Facing second down and goal, Raines called his own number and advanced into the end zone for the first score of the evening with 3:19 remaining in the first quarter of play. The PAT attempt, D. Johnson around the left side of the line of scrimmage was successful giving the Wildcats an early lead 8 - 0.

 

Palmer fielded the ensuing kick by D. Johnson at the 20-yard line and rambled his way down field along the right side line reaching the 48-yard line where officials ruled he had stepped out of bounds. On first down Palmer got the call to continue with his fight taking the hand-off from Nichols but he was met in the back field for a 1-yard loss. On second down the Lions were penalized for an illegal procedure and the misery continued on the replay of down as the Lions were once again penalized for an illegal procedure. With another replay of downs deeper back field in their own territory at the 37-yard line, Palmer took the pitch-out but was brought down immediately by Cameron Bonner and a host of others. Facing third down and 26-yards at their 31-yard line, Palmer attempted to gain some security yardage but D. Johnson was on the spot for the stop and a 1-yard loss. Fourth down brought Holiday into the back field once again to punt the ball away with D. Johnson back to receive for Berry. Johnson made the reception at the Wildcats 48-yard line and was tackled by Upton at the Lions 41-yard line setting Raines and the Wildcat offense up with short yardage once again.

 

First down brought Franklin with the hand-off up the middle with McCluskey on the stop at the 29-yard line. D. Johnson took the ball deeper on the Lions picking up 8-yards on first down with Tranum and Cannon Alexander making the tackle as the first quarter came to a close. Holiday and Palmer rambled thru the offensive line and sacked Raines on second down for a 1-yard loss and on third down Raines fumbled the ball on the snap but the Wildcats recovered setting up fourth down at the 26-yard line. Raines scrambled around in the backfield and connected with Sam Franklin in the end zone for the score with 6:55 remaining in the second quarter. The two point conversion on the PAT was successful with D. Johnson fighting his way off would be tacklers to reach the end zone and leave the score standing 16 - 0 in favor of the Wildcats.

 

D. Johnson's ensuing kick was received by Marcum-Pollard at the 43-yard line with Marcum-Pollard advancing three yards before being brought down by D. Jones. First down brought Nichols with a keeper but he fumbled the ball with Tranum recovering at the Lion 42-yard line. Second down brought additional problems for the Lion offense as they were penalized once again for an illegal procedure. Facing second down and 19-yards at their own 37-yard line, M. Stidham took the hand-off and gained 6-yards before Sam Franklin made the tackle. Nichols reverted to the passing attack on third down connecting with Lucas Stidham who was brought down immediately by Gann and Will Madison. Facing fourth down and 11 at the 44-yard line, Holiday lined up once again to punt the ball away but the Lions faked the kick and passed the ball to M. Stidham who made the reception but didn't gain enough yardage for the first down with D. Johnson and Ethan Franklin on the tackle.

 

The Wildcats stuck with D. Johnson on the rushing attack on first down with M. Stidham and Palmer on the stop for no yardage gained. Raines called his own number on second down and scampered his way around the left side of the line of scrimmage where Palmer made the tackle at the Lion 43-yard line. First down brought D. Johnson with the carry down the left side line and out of bounds after a 5-yard gain. On second down Raines attempted to hand the ball off to Sam Franklin but the ball came loose on the exchange but Franklin managed to recover for the Wildcats. The Wildcats were penalized on the play as well for holding but the Lions declined the penalty setting up third down and 13-yards at the Lion 47-yard line. Aaron Cribb and McCluskey raced into the back field with the snap of the ball to sack Raines for a 4-yard loss and D. Johnson lined up deep in the back field punting the ball away.

 

Palmer was back to receive for Hub but the ball sailed deep and rolled down near the 5-yard line where Palmer was brought down immediately by Sam Franklin and Morrison setting the Nichols and the Lion offense up deep in their own territory. First down brought Palmer with the hand-off but he was met in the back field by Morrison and a host of others for a 2-yard loss. Facing second down and 12 at the 4-yard line, Nichols called on Palmer to gain yardage again but Palmer was met at the line of scrimmage by a host of defenders for no gain. Nichols called his own number on third down and fumbled the ball with the Wildcats recovering the ball just inside the 3-yard line.

 

Wasting no time, D. Johnson took the hand-off and rambled into the end zone for his second score of the evening. The PAT, two point conversion was unsuccessful as the Lions stopped Raines just short of the goal line to leave the score standing 22 - 0 with only 40.5 seconds remaining in the first half of play.

 

D. Johnson's ensuing kick traveled out of bounds at the Lion 28-yard line. On first down Palmer took the hand-off and rambled his way along the right side line where Bonner forced him out of bounds after a 5-yard gain. On second down, Palmer scrambled over the left side of the line of scrimmage for the first down before Ethan Franklin could make the stop at the Lion 44-yard line. First down brought Palmer once again with the carry but he was brought down by Morrison allowing time to expire on the first half of the game.

 

Opening the second half of play D. Johnson once again kicked the ball deep down field with Palmer making the reception at the 23-yard line and advancing to the 34-yard line where Johnson and Caleb Bruggerman made the tackle. On first down Upton took the hand-off and rushed around the right side line to advance the ball but the Lions were penalized moving the ball back to the 29-yard line. Palmer took the pitch-out on the replay of down and attempted to connect down field with M. Stidham but the ball fell incomplete setting up second down. Misery continued for the Lions as once again the ball was fumbled on the snap but Upton was on the spot to recover for the Lions. Facing third down and 16-yards at the 28-yard line, M. Stidham took the hand-off and gained 4-yards over right guard with Ethan Franklin making the tackle for the Wildcats. Fourth down brought Holiday into the backfield to punt the ball away with the ball rolling dead at the Berry 46-yard line.

 

First down brought continued misery for the Lions as D. Johnson took the hand-off from Raines and rambled down field into the end zone for his third touchdown of the evening. S. Franklin took the hand-off and fought across the goal line for the two point conversion on the PAT and the Wildcats continued building their strong lead 30 - 0 with 5:47 remaining in the third quarter.

 

D. Johnson's ensuing kick was fielded by Nichols at the 23-yard line and advanced to the Lion 34-yard line with Johnson and a host of others on the tackle. First down brought Palmer with the hand-off up the middle but D. Johnson was on the stop for the Wildcats after a 4-yard gain. Palmer advanced the ball an additional 5-yards on second down before Sam Franklin made the tackle. Facing third down and 1-yard, Palmer took the hand-off around the left side line were D. Johnson chased him down for the tackle at the Wildcat 46-yard line. Sticking with Palmer on the carry didn't defer the Wildcats as he was brought down behind the line of scrimmage by a host of defenders led by Ethan Franklin. Palmer got the call to carry again on second down and rambled up the middle gaining 11-yards before Sam Franklin could make the saving stop. Facing third down and 4-yards, Palmer took the hand-off and rushed over the left side of the line of scrimmage where he was met immediately by Ethan Franklin for no gain. The Lions elected to go for the needed yardage on fourth down but the ball was fumbled away on the exchange thereby turning the ball over on downs to the Wildcats at their own 49-yard line.

 

Raines elected to test the Lion defenders by going to the passing game on first down with a completion made to Gann who was brought down by M. Stidham at the Lion 40-yard line. Sticking with the passing attack, Raines connected with Ethan Franklin who rambled his way to the 15-yard line before Cribb and Nichols could make the saving tackle. With first down in the Lion red zone, Sam Franklin took the hand-off where Tranum and Palmer made the stop after a 4-yard gain. On second down, Ethan Franklin took the hand-off and fought for 3-yards with McCluskey and Alexander on the tackle for the Lions as the third quarter came to a close.

 

D. Johnson was met at the line of scrimmage by M. Stidham and Upton on third down and held to no-gain setting up fourth down and 3-yards at the Lions 8-yard line. Raines elected to attack the Lion defenders thru the air but the pass to Ethan Franklin was overthrown turning the ball over on downs to the Lions deep in their own territory.

 

Palmer took the hand-off on first down attempting to move the ball out of the red zone but was met immediately at the line for a 1-yard loss. Sam Franklin made the tackle on Palmer on second down in the back field leaving the Lions facing third down and 13-yards just inside their own 5-yard line. Nichols went to the air attack completing a pass with Upton who fought his way to the 24-yard line for the first down. Sticking with the passing attack was unsuccessful on first down so the Lions reverted back to the rushing attack with Palmer advancing over the left side of the line of scrimmage to the Lion 37-yard line for another first down prior to the tackle by D. Johnson, Brueggermann, and Zane Cannon. M. Stidham took the hand-off on first down and fought his way over left guard for a 5-yard gain with Ethan Franklin on the stop for the Wildcats. Second down brought M. Stidham with the rushing attack once again gaining yardage to the Lion 49-yard line for another first down before Max Miller could make the saving tackle. Upton got the call to carry on first down and was met immediately at the line of scrimmage by Foster for no gain. Nichols called his own number on second down and rushed around the left side line and out of bounds after a 7-yard gain. Facing third down and 3-yards, Brady Tucker took the hand-off up the middle but was brought down immediately by Foster for the stop setting up fourth down and 3-yards. Palmer once again got the call to carry and rushed up the middle keeping the drive alive before Ethan Franklin and a host of other Wildcat defenders made the tackle at the Berry 38-yard line. Sticking with Palmer on the rushing attack proved successful as the Lions moved the ball deeper to the 38-yard line where D. Johnson and Ethan Franklin made the stop to save the score. With a new set of downs, Palmer once again took the hand-off and fought his way up the middle for an additional 3-yards setting up second down at the Wildcat 23-yard line. The Lions punished themselves by ending the drive with a fumble on the next play with the Wildcats recovering the loose ball at the line of scrimmage.

 

On first down Ethan Franklin took the pitch-out and rambled around the left side of the line of scrimmage but Holiday was on the spot to make the stop after no gain. Second down brought D. Johnson with the hand-off over the left side of the line of scrimmage with Holiday and Upton making the stop at the Wildcat 40-yard line. Facing first down, time expired before Raines and the Wildcat offense could execute the next play allowing time to expire.

 

The Junior Lions fall to 1 - 1 on the season following the 30 - 0 loss to the Berry Wildcats. They will play host to the Stallions of South Lamar on Monday, September 30. Game time is 6:30pm.
