The Lynn Junior Bears traveled to Hubbertville on Monday night October 7th to face the Hubbertville Junior Lions. The Lions wasted little time putting the first points on the scoreboard after taking the ball to the end zone on the first play of scrimmage. The game started with the Bears kicking off to the Lions with Ethan Nichols and the Lion offensive front taking to the field lining up with the ball at their own 44-yard line. With the snap of the ball Mason Stidham took the ball to the end zone for a 56-yard rushing touchdown. The two point conversion was successful on the PAT with John Upton crossing the goal line adding to the early score. With 7:27 showing on the clock the Lions held the early lead 8 - 0.

 

Lathan Holidays ensuing kick was recovered at the Bears 49-yard line setting the Bears offense up for their first possession. First down brought no gain and on second down the ball was intercepted by the Lion defender and returned to the Bears 44-yard line. With the snap of the ball Upton rambled untouched over the left side of the line of scrimmage racing to the end zone for another quick score for the homestanding Lions. The two point conversion was successful with Caleb Palmer rushing to the end zone untouched. With 6:54 remaining in the opening quarter the Lions were quickly adding to their lead by the score of 16 - 0.

 

Holidays ensuing kick was received at the 18-yard line with Nichols and Palmer on the stop for the Lions at the Bears 36-yard line. First down brought the pitch-out with a host of defenders led by Ethan McCluskey on the stop. Facing second down and 6-yards, the ball carrier fought up the middle where Holiday and Aaron Cribb made the tackle after a 4-yard gain. Third down brought penalty flags against the Lions who were lined up off-sides. With a first down at mid-field, the Bears Quarterback pitched the ball out to his ball carrier behind the left side of the line of scrimmage with the rushing attack converting back to the middle of the field heading for the end zone before Dylan Marcum-Pollard could make the saving tackle from behind to prevent the touch down. First down brought a passing attempt but the ball fell incomplete setting up second down and goal at the 5-yard line. On second down Upton and Robert Pitts made the tackle after a 1-yard gain over the right side of the line of scrimmage. Facing third down, the Bear ball carrier rushed up the middle for the score with 4:18 on the clock. The PAT was unsuccessful as Palmer made the tackle on the Quarterback in the backfield to leave the score at 16 - 6 in favor of the Lions.

 

The ensuing kick rolled dead at the 36-yard line where the Lion offense took to the field again. First down brought M. Stidham with the hand-off up the middle for a 5-yard gain. On second down Upton carried the ball over the left side picking up the first down at the Lion 47-yard line. Palmer fought his way around the left side of the line of scrimmage for 2-yards on first down and M. Stidham took the hand-off to the end zone for his second rushing score on the night. The 51-yard rushing touch down raised the score and following the two point conversion on the PAT the score stood 24 - 6 in favor of the Lions. The two point conversion was successful with Nichols connecting thru the air with Palmer.

 

Holidays ensuing kick was fielded at the 25-yard line and returned to the Lion 43-yard line where Nichols and a host of other defenders made the tackle. First down brought the pitch-out to the left side with M. Stidham making the tackle after a 3-yard gain. Following the play the Bears were backed up for an illegal procedure setting up a replay from the 46-yard line. Palmer, Tre Tranum and Pitts were quick into the backfield to make the stop and a 2-yard loss on the play. On second down the Bear signal caller attempted a pass connection over the middle but the ball fell incomplete setting up third down. Palmer and Marcum-Pollard made the tackle on the ball carrier at the Lion 39-yard line setting up fourth down and 6-yards. Electing to go back to the air for the needed yardage was successful as the pass was completed moving the ball to the Lion 39-yard line as the first quarter came to a close.

 

Attempting to stick with the passing game failed on first down as the ball was knocked away by Palmer. On second down the Bears continued the passing attack over the middle but M. Stidham was on coverage and the ball was overthrown. Facing third down and 10-yards, the Bears reverted to the rushing attack and the ball carrier took the hand-off around the right side line to the end zone for the score with 7:37 remaining in the second quarter of play. The pass to the end zone was successful and the score rose to 24 - 14 with the Lions still holding the lead.

 

Marcum-Pollard recovered the ensuing kick at the Lions 38-yard line where Nichols and the offensive front returned to the field. First down brought Palmer over left tackle for a 2-yard gain. On second down Palmer took the hand-off around the right side of the line of scrimmage before cutting back up the middle to the Bears 45-yard line for the first down. Misery almost struck for the Lions as the ball came free on the pitch-out but M. Stidham recovered the loose ball setting the Lions up at the 48-yard line. Facing second down and 16-yards, Upton took the hand-off and fought his way over left guard for a 2-yard gain. Third down brought Palmer with the hand-off from Nichols. Palmer set his feet and passed the ball down field to M. Stidham who rambled to the end zone untouched for his third touchdown of the night. Nichols attempted to connect thru the air with Upton on the two point conversion but the pass fell incomplete leaving the score at 30 - 14 with 4:47 remaining in the first half of play.

 

Holidays kick was fielded at the 20-yard line with Brady Tucker making the tackle at the Bears 42-yard line. First down brought the rushing attack around the right side line with Upton and Cribb on the stop after a 7-yard gain. The Bears ball carrier recovered the loose ball on second down and fought his way up field to the Lion 46-yard line for a first down before Upton and Palmer could make the saving tackle. On first down the pass was incomplete and on second down the ball carrier rushed around the left side of the line of scrimmage reaching the 33-yard line to keep the drive alive before Upton brought him down from behind. On first down the ball carrier rushed around the right side of the line but Holiday and Upton made the stop after a 2-yard gain. Second down brought the signal caller up the left side line with M. Stidham on the stop at the 14-yard line. With a new set of downs following the successful run, the Bears Quarterback called his own number once again and was brought down for the tackle by Upton following a 2-yard gain. Sticking with the rushing attack, the Quarterback attempted a run up the middle but Pitts was on the spot for the stop resulting in no gain. Facing third down and 8-yards, the Bears reverted to their passing game and the Lions were penalized for interference moving the ball to the 6-yard line. First down brought the hand-off rushing attack up the middle but Upton, McCluskey and Cannon Alexander were on the stop after a 3-yard gain. With the snap of the ball the Quarterback handed the ball off to the rusher who fought his way behind blockers into the end zone around the left side of the line of scrimmage. Pitts made the stop behind the line of scrimmage on the 2-point conversion attempt and with 38.0 seconds remaining in the first half of play the score stood 30 -20 in favor of the Lions.

 

Alexander recovered the ensuing kick at the Lion 40-yard line setting Nichols and the Lion offense up with little time remaining in the first half of play. First down brought M. Stidham with the carry up the middle out to near the Bears 45-yard line but penalty flags moved the ball back to the Lion 35-yard line. Facing first down and 15-yards, M. Stidham got the call to move the ball with the rushing attack once again this time around the right side of the line of scrimmage gaining yardage and cutting back across the middle of the field before the ball was knocked loose with the Bears recovering at their own 48-yard line.

 

On first down the Lions got the ball back as the Bears fumbled on the exchange and Stidham recovered the ball at the Bear 49-yard line. Upton took the hand-off up the middle on first down and reached the 43-yard line as time expired on the first half of play. Both teams headed to their respective locker rooms with points on the scoreboard but the Lions held the slight lead 30 - 20.

 

Opening the second half of play, Holidays kick was fielded at the 37-yard line with Marcum-Pollard making the tackle at the Bears 36-yard line for a 1-yard loss. First down brought another big stop for the Lion defense as Pitts held his ground for no gain on the play. Facing second down and 11-yards, the Bears found more trouble as they were penalized for an illegal procedure backing the ball up to the 31-yard line. Palmer rushed into the backfield to continue the defensive stand sacking the Bears signal caller for an additional 5-yard loss and setting up third down and 21-yards at the 26-yard line. Reverting to the passing game didn't pay dividends as the ball fell incomplete sending Palmer back deep to receive the ball on the fourth down punt. During the punt the ball reverted off of a Lion player and was recovered by one of the Bears offensive players setting the Bears up with field position at their own 37-yard line. First down brought the rushing attack around the left side of the line of scrimmage with Tranum on the tackle after a 5-yard gain. On second down the Bears reverted to the passing attack with the ball falling incomplete as M. Stidham was in position to knock the ball away from the would be receiver. Pitts, Holiday and Tranum rushed into the backfield and made the defensive stop on third down for a 1-yard loss after the ball carrier scrambled his way back near the line of scrimmage. Facing fourth down and 4-yards at their own 43-yard line, the Bears elected to go for the needed yardage but Upton and Nichols made the stop after a 2-yard gain resulting in the ball being turned over on downs to the Lions at the Bears 45-yard line.

 

First down brought Palmer with the hand-off over right guard and untouched rambling his way down field for the quick score. Sticking with Palmer on the two point conversion paid off as he once again found the end zone by rushing around the right side of the line of scrimmage to leave the score standing at 38 - 20 in favor of the Lions.

 

Holidays ensuing kick was recovered at the 39-yard line and the Bears offense was back at work. First down brought a pass in the backfield but M. Stidham was on the mark to make the stop at the line of scrimmage for no gain. On second down the Bears caught the Lion defense off guard with the reverse play moving the ball down field but Lucas Stidham made the stop for the Lions. Following the play the Lions were penalized moving the ball to the Lion 44-yard line. With the snap of the ball the Bears ball carrier was met immediately by Riley Hubbert, M. Stidham and Palmer for the stop and no-gain on the play. Facing third down and 4-yards, the ball was pitched out to the ball carrier who rambled his way down the left side line where L. Stidham made the saving stop. Following the play the Lions were penalized moving the ball to the Lion 31-yard line. On first down the Bears Quarterback called his own number but Pitts was on the stop after a 2-yard gain. On second down the Bears were penalized for an illegal procedure moving the ball back to the 34-yard line as the third quarter of play came to a close.

 

Facing a second down and 13-yards on the replay of downs, the Bears reverted to the passing game with the connection made thru the air over the middle for the first down at the Lion 14-yard line. The Quarterback called his own number on first down and rambled around the left side line with M. Stidham on the stop for the Lions at the 8-yard line. Attempting to move the ball up the middle with the rushing attack proved successful as the Bears reached the 3-yard line setting up first down and goal at the 3-yard line. The Quarterback took the ball to the end zone behind his center for the score with 6:50 remaining in the game. The two point conversion was successful and the Lion lead had been cut to ten points again as the score stood 38 - 28.

 

The ensuing kick didn't travel the required yardage and the Lions offense returned to the field with the possession marker setting at the Bears 46-yard line. Palmer took the pitch-out from Nichols and rambled off would be tacklers fighting his way to the end zone for the quick score, his second touchdown of the evening. Following a successful carry to the end zone on the two point conversion by M. Stidham the score raised 46 - 28.

 

C. Palmer lined up and kicked the ensuing kick to the Bears 41-yard line where the ball was recovered setting up the Bears offense. First down brought the rushing attack around the left side of the line of scrimmage with Upton on the stop after a 5-yard gain. On second down a keeper over the left side of the line of scrimmage reached the Lion 46-yard line with Marcum-Pollard on the stop for the Lions. First down brought the hand-off over the left side of the line of scrimmage but the Bears were penalized for holding moving the ball back to the Lion 49-yard line. Tranum rushed into the backfield and sacked the Quarterback on the replay of down and on second down the pass fell incomplete along with a penalty flag against the Bears for an ineligible receiver down field. The Bears once again attempted the reverse but M. Stidham and Holiday were on the spot for the stop. Fourth down brought the Bear Quarterback with a keeper reaching the first down marker before L. Stidham and Holiday could make the saving tackle. With a first down at the Lion 36-yard line, the pitch out attacked the left side line but Upton and a host of defenders made the tackle setting up second down and 1-yard. Holiday rushed into the backfield and made the sack on second down for a loss. Third down brought another keeper around the left side of the line of scrimmage but Walter Gary and Holiday were in position for the tackle at the 25-yard line. Three continuous passing attacks failed for the Bears with M. Stidham and Palmer on coverage for the Lions. Facing fourth down and 10-yards at the 25-yard line the Bears attempted one last pass completion but Upton stepped in front of the would be receiver making the reception interception at the Lion 10-yard line returning the ball to the 14-yard line.

 

First down brought Upton over right tackle for a 5-yard gain before being brought down by an angry host of defenders. Palmer took the hand-off on second down and raced down the left side of the line of scrimmage behind blockers reaching the end zone untouched for his final touchdown on the evening and following the keeper by Nichols on the two point conversion the Lions lead increased by the score of 54 - 28 with 1:16 remaining in the game.

 

Palmers ensuing kick was received at the 33-yard line and advanced to the Bear 38-yard line where Pitts and Marcum-Pollard made the stop. Will Gray and Brady Tucker made the tackle on first down after a 2-yard gain and on second down Marcum-Pollard made the open field tackle at the Bear 49-yard line. Before the Bears were able to get another play off from the line of scrimmage time expired with the victory going to the Lions by the score of 54 - 28.

 

The Junior Lions stand at 3 - 1 with one game remaining on the schedule this year. The Junior Lions will close out their season with a game against the Phillips Junior Bears on Monday, October 28th. The game will be in Bear Creek with kick-off at 6:30pm.
