The Panthers of Collinsville made the long haul trek from Dekalb County to Hubbertville on Friday to face off against the Lions in the opening round of the Alabama High School Athletic Association Play-offs. The visiting Panthers won the coin toss and elected to defer to the second half sending the Lion kicking team to the field to get the much anticipated match-up underway. Following the deep kick the Panthers began their opening drive at the 26-yard line where Dakota Dozier was quick to make his presence known on the field by making solo tackles on the first two downs allowing a gain of only 3-yards and leaving Quarterback Tanner Nelson and the Panther defense facing third down and 7-yards. McKain Hubbert and Nathan Young made the tackle on third down and the Lion defense held the Panthers to four plays forcing a punt which rolled dead at the Lion 36-yard line.

The Lion offense marched down the field on their opening drive behind rushing attacks by Dax Benton, Landon Miller and T.J. Pratt as well as a pass connection from Quarterback Vess Benton to Miller when the Lions were facing third down and 8-yards at their own 38-yard line. The connection resulted in Miller picking up the first down at the Lion 48-yard line to keep the opening possession alive. Continuing with the rushing attacks of D. Benton, Miller and Pratt the Lions picked up consecutive back to back first downs moving the ball deep into Panther territory with the ball resting at the 24-yard line. D. Benton and Pratt continued pounding the ball across the line and moved the ball deeper setting up first down and goal just inside the 9-yard line where misery almost struck early-on for the Lions. The ball came loose on the exchange from V. Benton, but Pratt fought to recover the loose ball for the Lions setting up second down and goal near the 11-yard line. V. Benton called upon Pratt to continue the fight and Pratt took the ball to the end zone over right tackle lighting up the scoreboard first for the homestanding Lions. The PAT kick by D. Benton was perfect and the score stood 7 - 0 with 2:00 remaining in the opening quarter.

The ensuing kick by D. Benton sailed out of bounds setting Nelson and the Panther defense up at their own 35-yard line. First down brought penalty flags against the Panthers for an illegal procedure moving the ball back to the 30-yard line. The Panthers elected to pursue their second drive with the passing attack but on the replay of down the ball sailed in and out of the hands of Jordan Leath. Devin Marcum and Miller made the stop on second down after an 11-yard gain leaving the Panthers facing third down and 4-yards at their 41-yard line. Shaq Dupree took the handoff over left guard for 5-yards to keep the drive alive with M. Hubbert and Kris Parson on the tackle for the Lions. With a new set of downs, Nelson went back to the air attack but the ball was knocked away by D. Benton but following the play the Lions were penalized for interference setting up first down at the Lions 39-yard line. Sticking with the passing attack, Nelson went back to Leath along the right side line but D. Benton made the immediate tackle after a 7-yard gain as the first quarter of play came to a close.

Second down brought Pratt and Anthony Dillard fighting into the backfield to bring Jayln Martin down for no gain on the play. Nelson called his own number on third down scrambling to the 26-yard line to keep the drive alive with Parson and Marcum on the stop. Reverting back to the passing game, Leath made the reception along the side line but D. Benton made the tackle setting up second down and 7-yards at the Lions 23-yard line. Electing to continue the fight with the passing game, Nelson attempted a connection over the middle with Martin but Dozier was on coverage forcing the ball to be overthrown. With the snap of the ball Martin took the handoff and rushed around the right side of the line of scrimmage with M. Hubbert and Pratt on the stop for the Lions at the 14-yard line. The Panthers found themselves setting inside the Lions red zone with another set of downs but on first down Jordan White, N. Young and Pratt were in position to bring Martin down after a 1-yard rushing gain. Nelson attempted to catch the Lions off-guard with a pass attempt in the end zone to Brady Osborn but V. Benton was on coverage forcing the incomplete pass setting up third down and 9-yards. The Panthers were moved back 5-yards with the snap of the ball for an illegal procedure setting up third down and 14-yards at the 18-yard line. Following a short 2-yard pass completion to Leath with D. Benton forcing him out of bounds the Panthers drive had come to a stall leaving them facing fourth down and 12-yards at the 16-yard line. The Collinsville coaching staff elected to attempt a field goal but White fought his way across the line blocking the ball to the ground and leaving the Panther side of the score board empty.

Five plays later the Lions were lighting up additional points on their side of the scoreboard. First down brought Pratt battling over left guard for a 5-yard gain. The angry Panther defense held D. Benton to a 1-yard gain on second down but on third down Pratt took the handoff and scrambled around the left end fighting away from would be tacklers reaching the 42-yard line for a 16-yard gain before Dallas Reed was able to make the saving tackle. First down brought D. Benton with the handoff over right guard for 7-yards and on second down V. Benton connected on a pass over the middle with little brother D. Benton who raced his way untouched for the touchdown. The PAT kick by D. Benton was perfect and with 5:22 remaining in the opening half the Lions were building their first half lead.

The Panthers struck back quick following the ensuing kick by M. Hubbert which was fielded at the 32-yard line by Levi Barkley and returned to the Lion 38-yard line where Gabe Stidham and Miller made the saving tackle. Two plays later the Panthers were on the scoreboard following a pass over the middle from Nelson to Osborn who raced untouched for the quick comeback score. The PAT kick by Alexis Sanchez-Flores sailed straight thru the uprights and the Panthers side of the score board lit up with 4:07 remaining in the first half of play.

D. Benton fielded Sanchez-Flores' ensuing kick at the 2-yard line and scampered up field to the 19-yard line where Austin Brozio and Aaron Rodriguez made the tackle. First down brought Miller up the middle for a 7-yard gain and D. Benton took the handoff to the 40-yard line to award another set of downs. Pratt got the call on first down taking the handoff but was met in the backfield by Martin, Kevin McElrath and others for the stop. Facing second down and 13--yards, D. Benton was brought down in the backfield by Nicholas Brockitt leaving the Lions facing third down and 14-yards at their own 36-yard line. Pratt got the call to fight for the needed yardage on third down but was met near the line of scrimmage by a host of defenders denying the first down and forcing M. Hubbert to the backfield to punt the ball away.

Leath and Martin lined up deep to receive the ball but Hubberts kick rolled out of bounds at the Panthers 36-yard line setting Nelson and his offensive group up with time ticking quickly off the clock for half-time. First down brought a deep pass which was overthrown due to the pressure applied by Pratt and Dozier. On second down the Panthers were penalized for a delay of game moving the ball back to the 31-yard line. On the replay of down, Nelson connected thru the air with Martin who rambled down the left side line before D. Benton forced him out of bounds near mid-field but the play was returned due to an ineligible receiver down field. Facing second down and 20-yards at their own 26-yard line brought additional misery for Nelson as Dozier made the sack on him for a 1-yard loss. Facing third down deep in their own territory the Collinsville coaching staff elected to allow time to expire sending the teams to the locker rooms for the half time break with the Lions holding the lead 14 - 7.

Opening second half of play, Sanchez-Flores' kick was fielded by D. Benton near the 10-yard line and advanced to the 34-yard line where McElrath made the stop. On first down D. Benton took the handoff and was brought down in the backfield by a host of defenders setting up second down and 14-yards at the 30-yard line. D. Benton lined up at quarterback on second down and connected thru the air with a pass to his older brother V. Benton who raced across mid-field to the Collinsville 42-yard line before Martin could make the solo tackle from behind. With a new set of downs, V. Benton reverted to quarterback and called upon Miller to fight for yardage with Miller moving the ball over right guard on three consecutive downs for rushing gains of 14-yards, 16-yards and 12-yards with the later carry resulting in a touchdown for the Lions with 9:48 remaining in the third quarter. Following a penalty against the Lions for a delay on the PAT kick, D. Benton booted the ball straight down the middle of the uprights to raise the Lion lead to 21 - 7.

Another quick score by the Panthers let the Lions know it wasn't quite time to let-up and relax their game. The ensuing kick by M. Hubbert was received at the 32-yard line by Barkley who was brought down immediately by Austin Palmer. First down brought Martin over left guard with Parson, White and a host of others on the stop. Facing second down and 8-yards at the 34-yard line, Nelson connected with Martin who stayed focus following a tipped ball by A. Palmer and took the reception to the end zone for the quick touchdown.

Sanchez-Flores' kick on the PAT was perfect and with 8:37 remaining the Panthers were making a statement to let the Lions know they were still fighting for the victory.

D. Benton, A. Palmer and White lined up deep to receive the ensuing kick from Sanchez-Flores' but the ball rolled into the end zone setting the Lions up at their own 35-yard line. The Panther faithful got loud and the Lions found themselves facing fourth down and 3-yards at their own 42-yard line following rushing attacks by Miller, Pratt and D. Benton. The Lion coaching staff elected to fight for the needed yardage but V. Benton was sacked by Osborn forcing the ball to be turned over on downs to the Panthers at the Lion 40-yard line.

First down brought a deep pass down field but the ball was over thrown to Malik Mathis. Second down brought another deep passing attempt but once again the ball was thrown way too deep with pressure applied by Pratt and Dozier. On third down, N. Young, Dozier and Pratt continued applying pressure forcing Nelson to scramble deep into the backfield before being forced out of bounds and following the play the Panthers were penalized for a block in the back setting up third down and 23-yards at the 33-yard line. D. Benton was in position knocking the ball away on third down to bring up fourth down for Nelson and the Panthers. The Collinsville coaching staff elected to fight for the needed yardage but Parson remained in position to make the tackle on Nelson at the Lion 32-yard line. Following a penalty which was declined by the Lions, V. Benton and his offensive front returned to the field.

Pratt took the handoff over left tackle on first down rambling up field but following the play the ball was moved to the 43-yard line where Miller got the call to carry. Miller took the handoff but was stripped of the ball with the Panthers recovering at their own 46-yard line.

Second down brought Arnoldo Martinez out of the backfield with the carry but Miller, Marcum and Dozier was in position for the stop after an 8-yard gain setting up third down and 1-yard. McElrath was stopped behind the line of scrimmage by Marcum, Miller and M. Hubbert and others forcing the Panthers to face a decision as to whether to fight for the needed 3-yards on fourth down. Before the ball could be snapped the Panthers were penalized for delay of game moving the ball back an additional 5-yards to the 49-yard line and Nelson was brought down with the sack by N. Young, M. Hubbert, Pratt and Parson forcing the ball over on downs to the Lions at the Panther 47-yard line.

Facing third down and 6-yards at the 43-yard line, Miller got the call to fight up the middle for the first down with the ball placed at the 34-yard line. D. Benton took the handoff and rambled around the right side of the line of scrimmage to the 26-yard line with Dominick Brockitt on the tackle. Pratt fought his way around right end to award the Lions with another first down at the 15-yard line with Martinez and D. Brockitt making the saving tackle. First down brought Miller up the middle once again for 4-yards and on second down D. Benton took the handoff and followed the blocking of Dozier into the end zone for his second touchdown of the night. The PAT kick by D. Facing third down and 24-yards at their own 23-yard line the Panthers attempted to catch the Lion defensive off-guard but White, N. Young and a host of other defenders made the stop at the line of scrimmage on Martin setting up fourth down and 24-yards.

Comments from Head Coach Lamar Harris:
" I felt as though our guys played some really good ball tonight. We had a couple of plays which cost us points which in-turn can comeback to hurt a team in a close game. That's something we've got to work on this week in practice and that's something we haven't really allowed throughout the season so it is of concern. We had the broken coverage which cost us a touchdown and of course the almost interception, when we knocked the ball up into the air with it falling back into the receivers hands resulting in a quick score. That was unfortunate but that happens in games. But all in all I am very happy with the overall team effort tonight. The guys played really well with exception of a couple of plays. We were clicking on both sides of the ball tonight and that's a testament of the composure of this team. I'm proud to advance deeper in the state play-offs and I'm glad that I have the opportunity to continue coaching and allowing these players to do what they love in playing the game. We have a great group of seniors who show tremendous leadership and its great to see them remain poised and focused and that reflects down in ranks to our underclassmen. We've got a great group of guys and we're thankful for the support from our dedicated fans and we know without doubt that they'll follow us to the game next week and continue supporting the teams efforts."
