The Lion football team opened their 2010 home schedule by welcoming the Stallions of South Lamar to Wiley Hollingsworth Stadium on Friday night.

With the Stallions coming off a big win over county rival Lamar County the previous week, the Lions knew the task at hand wasn't going to be an easy one.  After team captains met at mid-field for the coin toss, Hubbertville lined up to kick the ball to the visiting Stallions to get the game underway.  Team Captains for the Stallions were Seniors:  Daniel Atkinson, Corey Jones, Davey Long, and Ken Mitchell.  Representing the Lions as team Captains were:  Hunter O'Mary - Junior, David Aldridge - Sophomore, Aaron Dillard - Sophomore, and Landon Miller - Freshman.

Back to receive the opening kick from Lions Kicker, Landon Miller was Kyle Robertson and Jordan Smith.  Miller's kick was a pooch-kick, rolling out of bounds just beyond the South Lamar 45-yard line.  The Stallions utilized their rushing attack on their first possession but was met by a stiff Lion defense forcing them to punt the ball away on fourth down.  Facing fourth down and long yardage, Hank Parker's punt rolled dead at the Lion 26-yard line.

Lion Quarterback Jake McCollum lead his offense to the field and following a strong defensive hold by the Stallions on the first three downs, Hunter O'Mary was forced to punt the ball away to the Stallions.  O'Mary's punt rolled dead at the Stallions 41-yard line.  Jordan Smith returned his offensive team to the field and on first down Ken Mitchell burst his way around the left line for an 8-yard gain before Landon Miller could make the stop for the Lions.  Facing second down and 2, Smith attempted his first pass of the evening but the ball fell incomplete out of the reach of Daniel Atkinson.  Jordan Smith with a keeper on third down scampered over the left line of scrimmage and across midfield to the Lion 37-yard line before Mikey McCraw made the saving stop for the Lions.  Reverting back to the passing attack, Smith connected with Daniel Atkinson and following a penalty against the Lions on the play, the Hubbertville Lions found themselves with the Stallions deep in their red-zone at the 15-yard line.  Parker took the hand-off on first down and drove over the left tackle for a 5-yard gain where Hunter O'Mary made the stop for the Lions.  The five yard gain was remitted and the ball was returned to the 15-yard line following a penalty for illegal procedure against the Stallions.  Before the Stallions could move the ball further, they were penalized again for illegal procedure setting up second down and 15-yards at their own 20-yard line.  On second down, Smith's pass to Daniel Atkinson fell incomplete with Jake McCollum on coverage for the Lions.  Third down brought another passing attempt from Smith but with pressure from Mikey McCraw, the passing attempt was hurried and fell incomplete setting up fourth down and 15-yards at the 20-yard line.  Determined not to come away from the red-zone with out a touchdown, Smith connected with Daniel Atkinson over the middle for the first points of the evening with 5:04 remaining in the first quarter of play.  The PAT; Tyler Riley's kick sailed perfectly down the middle of the uprights to give the Stallions a 7-0 advantage.

Tyler Riley's ensuing kick sailed deep to the 22-yard line where Corey Stewart made the reception for the Lions.  First down brought Dylan Dillard up the middle for a short gain with Jordan Smith on the stop for the Stallions.  Dylan Dillard got the rushing call on second down and was met at the 26-yard line for the stop by Blake Mitchell.  Facing third down and 7, Aaron Dillard took the hand-off from McCollum and rushed over the right line of scrimmage out to the 34-yard line earning the Lion offense their first first down of the evening.  Dylan Dillard rushed over the middle for a five yard gain on first down where Daniel Atkinson made the stop.  On second down, the Stallions were penalized for off-sides moving the ball to the 44-yard line and setting up a new set of downs for the Lion offense.  Dylan Dillard got the call to carry the ball on the first possession gaining 3-yards before a host of upset Stallions rallied for the stop.  Second down brought Hunter O'Mary busting his way over the left line and across mid-field to the Stallion 45-yard line where Daniel Atkinson and Ken Mitchell made the stop.  Sticking with the rushing attack, Aaron Dillard took the hand-off on first down and followed his blockers to the Stallion 34-yard line setting up another set of downs for the Lions.  Dylan Dillard was met near the line of scrimmage on the next play to set up second down and 9 for the Lions.  Hunter O'Mary wasted little time getting the ball further down field and closer to the Stallion red-zone on the next play with a gain of 11-yards before Mitchell could make the stop.  Facing first down at the 24-yard line, McCollum called on Aaron Dillard to carry the ball and after a 2-yard gain the Lions were facing second down and 8 at the Stallion 22-yard line.  O'Mary took the hand-off and burst his way up the middle of the field to the 12-yard line giving the Lions a first down deep in Stallion terroritory.  Dylan Dillard inched the Lion offense closer to the goal line with his carry on the next play but Daniel Atkinson and Shane Wright was there to make the stop.  Second down brought O'Mary with a rushing attempt over the middle but Tremaine Willingham made his presence on the field know, stopping O'Mary after a 3-yard gain.  Facing third down and 3, Aaron Dillard rushed straight-up the middle and into the end zone for the touchdown.  The PAT, kick by Aaron Dillard was perfect and the Lions had their first score of the evening with 9:20 left in the first quarter.

Standing deep to receive for the Stallions were Jordan Smith and Ken Mitchell.  Landon Miller's kick was received at the 30-yard line by Smith who returned the ball to the 41-yard line where Mikey McCraw and Wade Tidwell made the stop for the Lions.  First down brought a penalty flag against the Stallion offense, moving the ball back to the 36-yard line.  Facing first down and 15, a bad snap high over Smith's head, brought Lion defenders Colby Ellis and Phil Kizzire rushing into the back field to make the stop.  Facing second down and 27-yards at their own 24-yard line, the Stallions elected to revert to the passing attack to move the ball down field.  Smith connected with Ken Mitchell who fought his way to the 46-yard setting up third down and 5 for the Stallions.  Smith on a keeper rushed up the middle and across mid-field to the Lion 47-yard line where he was met by Wade Tidwell and Mikey McCraw for the stop.  With a new set of downs, Mitchell took the hand-off and cut back across the field where Landon Miller made the tackle for the Lions.  Following the play the Stallions were penalized for an illegal block in the back moving the ball back to the Stallion 48-yard line.  Facing first down and 15, Smith on a keeper rushed up the middle where Colby Ellis made the stop after a 1-yard gain.  On second down, Ellis burst his way thru the line and sacked Smith for a 4-yard loss.  Pressure by Colby Ellis and Mikey McCraw on third down forced Smith to throw the ball deep and out of the reach of Daniel Atkinson.  Hank Parker lined up and punted the ball away to the Lions on fourth down.

Parker's punt was fielded at the 26-yard line and advanced to the Lion 38-yard line by Dylan Dillard.  Misery struck for the Lions on first down as Dylan Dillard fumbled the ball and the Stallions recovered at the Lion 43-yard line.  First down brought penalty flags and the Stallions were moved back to the Lion 48-yard line for illegal procedures.  Facing first down and 15, Smith attempted to connect thru the air with Hank Parker but Dylan Dillard was there to break the pass up for the Lions.  Daniel Atkinson took the hand off from Smith on second down and burst across the line of scrimmage fighting his way to the Lion 33-yard line before Hunter O'Mary could make the stop for the Lions.  Ken Mitchell then took the pitch-out from Smith and rolled left where David Aldridge made the stop for the Lions at the 22-yard line.  Hank Parker was called upon again to carry the ball but the ball was fumbled with Andrew Price recovering the loose ball for the Lions.

On first down, the Lion coaching staff called upon Aaron Dillard to move the ball up the field.  Dillard took the hand-off from McCollum and burst his way across the line of scrimmage for a huge gain with a rushing carry of 40-yards to the Stallion 39-yard line before Jordan Smith and Ken Mitchell were able to make the saving stop.  First down brought O'Mary up the middle for another 8-yard gain before Mitchell and Smith made the stop again for the Stallions.  On second down, Aaron Dillard took the hand-off and burst his way up the middle behind his blockers pushing down to the 13-yard line before Mitchell could make the tackle.  First down brought Aaron Dillard with another rushing attempt, but this time he tripped up with his own blockers after a 1-yard gain.  On second down, O'Mary finished the drive off and rushed to the end zone untouched for the score.  The PAT, kick by Aaron Dillard was right down the middle of the uprights and with 1:39 remaining in the first half of play the Lions were leading 14-7.

Landon Millers ensuing kick was fielded at the 43-yard line by Hank Parker who advanced to the Stallion 46-yard line before being met for the stop by Mikey McCraw.  On first down the Lions jumped off sides moving the ball to the Lion 49-yard line.  Smith on a keeper advanced the ball to the Lion 44-yard line where McCraw made the stop for the Lions.  With another set of downs for the Stallions, Smith's intent was to continue pushing the ball forward with the rushing attack, however with the next snap of the ball, the ball was fumbled with a high snap and McCraw continued showing his presence on the field by recovering the loose ball at the Stallion 41-yard line.

The Lion offense was unable to take advantage of the turn-over and move the ball down the field turning the ball back over to the Stallions after a passing attempt by Dylan Dillard to Jake McCollum fell incomplete on fourth down.

The Stallion offense was met by a stiff defensive stand by the Lions.  On first down, Smith's pass attempt to Hank Parker was broken up by Phil Kizzire at the line of scrimmage.  The Stallions were turned away on second down with McCollum intercepting a deep pass at the Lion 38-yard line.  However, the Lions were unable to move the ball allowing time to expire on the first half of the game.

Returning from the locker room to start the second half of play, Captains Mitchell and O'Mary met at mid-field to get the game underway.  The Lions Dylan Dillard received the kick-off from Tyler Riley at the 16-yard line and rushed up field fighting off would be tacklers for a 59-yard kick-off return before Riley himself was able to make the tackle to save the touchdown.  First down brought more pain for the Stallions as they were penalized on the snap for illegal substitution moving the ball closer to the end zone.  On first down, O'Mary burst his way over his left guard for an 8-yard gain before Tremaine Willingham made the saving stop.  Second down brought Aaron Dillard with the carry, but Hank Parker was there for the stop after a 1-yard gain setting up third down and 3 at the 18-yard line.  O'Mary got the call to carry again on third down and was met by a stiff defensive front of Stallions at the line of scrimmage for no-gain.  Jarod Beasley, Ken Mitchell, Hank Parker and Tremaine Willingham were all involved with the stop on O'Mary.  Facing fourth down and 3, in the Stallion red-zone the Lion coaching staff elected to go for the yardage and called upon Aaron Dillard to carry the ball.  Dillard took the hand-off from McCollum and fought his way over the right side of the line of scrimmage to the end zone for the score.  On the PAT, the Lion coaching staff elected to go for two points, but the pass intended for Mikey McCraw in the corner of the end zone was broken up by Ken Mitchell.  With 9:50 remaining in the third quarter the Lions lead was 20-7.

Landon Miller's ensuing kick was fielded at the 30-yard line by Mitchell who rushed out to the Lion 36-yard line where McCollum made the saving tackle to temporarily keep the Stallions from adding points to their side of the scoreboard.  Three plays later the Stallions would refuse to be held out of the end zone as Mitchell took the hand-off from Smith and rushed over the left side of the line of scrimmage to the end zone to cut the Lions lead.  The PAT attempt, Tyler Riley's kick was perfect and the score stood 20-14 in favor of the Lions.

Comments from Coach Lamar Harris:

"We've had a very difficult week with practice.  It's just been one of those weeks where things just didn't look good on the practice field.  We couldn't get the guys focused on the task for some reason and the difficult week we've had in our practices showed-up early in the first part of the game tonight.  However, after their (South Lamar's) first score the guys responded well and played very well up until the fourth quarter and then we begin to loose all focus.  That's some issues that we will work on during practice and expect our team leaders to step up to make the necessary adjustments with focusing on the goal as we work our way into the fourth quarter.  Tonight we should have held the ball when we had the opportunity in the fourth quarter, but we allowed penalties to take our opportunity from us.  However we did manage to leave the playing field with a victory and that's what counts.  All in all I'm satisfied with the team effort.  I've got some guys who are banged up with earlier injuries and of course those have a bearing on the team as well.  We will continue to work with those guys and hopefully they can come back to assist at the earliest opportunity.  We will need them as we progress with the season."
