The Lion football team (4 - 0) welcomed the Brilliant Tigers to Hubbertville on Friday night to continue their play against Region 6 opponents. Team captains met at mid-field for the coin toss with David Beasley, Ethan Cummings, Tanner Elkins and Dustin Wood representing the Tigers. Captains for the Lions were Lathan Holliday, McKain Hubbert, Ethan McCluskey, Kris Parson and Tre Tranum. The Lions won the toss and elected to receive with Dax Benton and Austin Palmer dropping back deep to receive the opening kick from Caden Almond.

A. Palmer received the kick at the 22 yard line and rushed out to the Lion 36-yard line where Austin Sprinkle made the solo tackle setting up V. Benton and the Lion offensive front.  The Lions kept the ball on the ground with D. Benton taking the first down hand-off 13-yards awarding the Lions with another set of downs before Sprinkle could bring him down. V. Benton called his own number and moved the ball to the Lions 49-yard line where he was met by Elkins and a host of defenders leaving the Lions facing second down and four yards. A. Palmer took the pitch-out around the left side of the line of scrimmage for an eleven yard gain giving the Lions the first down on the Brilliant 40-yard line. With the snap of the ball, D. Benton wasted little time moving the ball deep into the Tigers red-zone with a twenty-four yard rushing attack where Timothy Kingsbury made the saving stop at the 16-yard line.  On first down Nathan Young pushed his way across the line of scrimmage for a three yard gain, then on second down he rushed over left tackle for an additional three yards where Blade Brasher, Sprinkle, Elkins and others made the stop leaving the Lions facing third down and four at the Tiger 10-yard line. First down brought D. Benton out of the backfield with the rushing attack where he was met by Elkins and a host of other defenders but not before reaching the first down marker. Billy McLemore met A. Palmer near the line of scrimmage for what appeared to be a loss, but Palmer fought his way forward and gained one yard leaving the Lions facing second down and goal from the Tigers 4-yard line. V. Benton called his own number and took the ball around the right end to the end zone for the first score on the evening. The PAT kick by D. Benton was no good and with 6:42 showing on the clock the Lions had taken the early lead.

D. Benton's ensuing kick rolled out of bounds setting Hayden Bryant and the Tiger offense up at their 35-yard line. Holliday and David Pitts, Jr. made the stop on David Price on first down after a one yard gain. Second down brought more of Price with the rushing attack but once again Pitts, Jr., assisted by M. Hubbert was on the stop for the Lions after a two yard gain. Sticking with Price as the ball carrier was unsuccessful for the Tigers as A. Palmer and N. Young remained in position for the stop after a five yard gain, leaving the Tigers facing fourth down and two from their own 44-yard line. Bryant dropped back and punted the ball away with A. Palmer making the reception and returning the punt up field to the Lions 44-yard line where McLemore made the tackle.

On first down V. Benton went to the air attack attempting to connect with Gabe Stidham down the right side of the field but the ball sailed in and out of the hands of Stidham bringing up second down. With the snap of the ball it appeared the Lions had added another quick six to the score board as D. Benton took the hand-off and raced untouched to the end zone but penalty flags against the Lions for holding returned the ball all the way back to the Lions 28-yard line. On the replay of down, N. Young took the hand-off over the left side of the line of scrimmage but was met immediately by Kingsbury and Dawson Eddy for the stop after a two yard gain. Third down brought a pass completion from V. Benton to G. Stidham, who rambled down to the Tigers 42-yard line where he was ruled as stepping out of bounds. First down brought confusion for the Lions offense and they were penalized for delay of game moving the ball back to the Tigers 47-yard line. On the replay of down, A. Palmer took the ball out of the backfield and gained the yardage back along with additional yardage leaving the Lions facing second down and two at the Tigers 34. Anthony Dillard fought his way over left guard but was met immediately for the stop by Price, Everett McGuire and a host of other defenders. Facing third down and inches, Dillard took the hand-off once again and bounced off his blockers rushing around the left side of the line to the 22-yard line to keep the drive alive.  On first down, V. Benton connected thru the air with G. Stidham who was brought down just inside the 5-yard line. Second down brought N. Young out of the backfield with the rushing attack for the touchdown with 5.0 seconds remaining in the first quarter of play. The PAT kick by M. Hubbert was perfectly executed and the Lions raised the score 13 - 0.

Starting off the second quarter of play, M. Hubbert's ensuing kick rolled deep into the end zone for the touch-back setting the Tigers up for their second possession at their 20-yard line. Sprinkle brought the ball around the right side of the line of scrimmage on first down but Dillard and others were on the stop setting up second down and six yards. Price continued the rushing attack on second down but Dillard, Zack Reeves and a host of others were on the stop setting up third down and five yards. A pass connection over the middle to Kingsbury was successful with N. Young and Caleb Palmer making the stop for the Lions at the 33-yard line.  A. Palmer and Reeves made the stop on Price on first down after a five yard gain and on second down Sprinkle was brought down for a loss in the backfield by Dillard. On third down, Dillard once again broke his way across the line into the backfield forcing Bryant to throw the ball down field earlier than anticipated with the pass intended for Price falling incomplete. Facing fourth down and six yards, Price punted the ball away with it sailing out of bounds at the Tigers 47-yard line.

D. Benton took the pitch-out from V. Benton on first down and rambled his way over the right side of the line of scrimmage deep down field into the Tigers territory with Price making the stop. The Lions were penalized for assisting the runner, moving the ball back to the Tiger 20-yard line. First down brought the first turn-over of the game with the ball coming loose on the exchange and the Tigers Cummings recovering at the 22-yard line.

On first down, Price rambled down the right side line where A. Palmer, Reeves and G. Stidham made the stop after a 3-yard gain. Second down brought Sprinkle with the carry up the middle but Pitts, Jr., Parson and N. Young were on the stop. Facing third down and five, Price took the pitch-out and was met by C. Palmer for the stop. The Tigers were penalized for a holding call moving the ball back to the 27-yard line. Price punted the ball away on fourth down with the ball rolling out of bounds at the Lions 46-yard line.

The Lion offense wasted little time putting additional points on the board with D Benton taking the hand-off and racing around the right side to the end zone for a 54-yard rushing touchdown. The PAT kick by M. Hubbert was perfect and the score stood 20 - 0 in favor of the home-standing Lions.

Nathan Winslett bobbled the ensuing kick from M. Hubbert but managed to recover the ball at the 6-yard line where John Upton and C. Palmer made the stop.  The Tigers found themselves deep in their end of the field and on first down Price attempted a pass connection along the right side line but the ball was overthrown and the Tigers were penalized on the play for a holding call. With the snap of the ball misery continued for the Tigers as the ball was knocked loose with C. Palmer recovering the ball close to the 5-yard line for the Lions.

On first down, A. Palmer took the pitch-out from V. Benton and rushed over left tackle where he was met near the goal line for the stop by McLemore, McGuire, Cummings and others. Facing second down and inches, A. Dillard took the hand-off and pushed his way into the end zone for the score with 5:02 remaining in the first half of play. The PAT kick by M. Hubbert was straight down the middle of the uprights and the score stood 27 - 0.

Anthony Sartin fielded the ensuing kick from M. Hubbert at the 12-yard line and raced down field untouched for the quick six putting the Tigers on the scoreboard before the half-time break. The PAT kick by Almond was unsuccessful but with 4:47 remaining in the first half the Tigers had points on the scoreboard.

Almond's ensuing kick was fielded at the 38-yard line by Reeves who signaled for the fair catch. V. Benton attempted a pass connection with A. Palmer on first down but the ball fell incomplete setting up second down. D. Benton took the hand-off from his older brother and zipped down the field racing around the right side line of the field untouched for a 62-yard rushing touchdown, his second rushing touchdown of the night. The PAT kick by M. Hubbert sailed left and the score stood 33 - 6 with 4:26 remaining in the first half of play.

Price, Winslett and Beasley lined up deep to receive the ensuing kick from M. Hubbert but allowed the ball to roll dead at the Tigers 7-yard line. The Lion defensive front held the Tigers to three downs and a punt with defensive stops by A. Palmer, Parson, N. Young, and Dillard. Facing third down and eight yards from their own 10-yard line, Reeves made the tackle on Price deep in the backfield, forcing Price to punt the ball away from deep in his own end zone.

A. Palmer was back to receive the punt making the reception with a fair-catch at the Tiger 34-yard line. A. Palmer rushed out of the backfield and down the left side line for a 13-yard gain on first down. V. Benton called upon Justin Hancock to be the recipient of the pass on first down with Hancock making the reception and racing untouched to the end zone for the quick score.  The PAT kick by M. Hubbert sailed perfectly down the middle of the uprights and with 1:25 remaining the Lions had the comfortable lead 40 - 6.

D. Benton's ensuing kick sailed deep to the 10-yard line where Winslett made the reception and was met by Nick Smith for the solo tackle at the Tigers 32-yard line. First down brought Price around the left side of the line of scrimmage with the carrier but A. Palmer and N. Young made the stop for the Lions after a two yard gain. On second down, C. Palmer intercepted the pass intended for Beasley and raced back up field but the Lions were penalized for an illegal block in the back setting up the offensive front at the Tigers 47-yard line. V. Benton took the snap and dropped to his knee to end the first half of play with the scoreboard reading in favor of the Lions 40 - 6.

Returning from the locker room, the Lion coaching staff had implemented their plans to allow playing time for additional players who hadn't had the opportunity to take to the field for playing time. Following the second half opening kick-off from D. Benton which was fielded at the 5-yard line by Winslett, with Smith making the solo stop at the 15-yard line, the Lions side lines started replacing their starters with substitutes. First down brought a fumble from the Tigers on the exchange but the loose ball was recovered by the Tigers. On second down Hancock and Joseph Rutledge made the tackle after a 2-yard gain by Winslett over the left side of the line of scrimmage. The Tigers were penalized for a holding call forcing a replay of the down with Winslett attacking the left side of the line once again but Rutledge, Hancock and Holliday were in position to make the stop in the backfield. Winslett continued his fight on third down but was met by Upton at the line of scrimmage forcing the Tigers to punt the ball away. Hancock dropped back to receive the punt with Dustin Wood booting the ball deep and Hancock allowing the ball to roll dead at the Tiger 37-yard line.

A. Palmer relieved V. Benton as Quarterback for the Lions and on first down Mason Stidham took the pitch-out around the right side of the line of scrimmage with Kingsbury making the solo tackle to save the touchdown. First down brought C. Palmer over left tackle then back up the middle with the rushing attack where he was stopped by Beasley just inside the 1-yard line to save the touchdown. The ball came loose on the hand-off and the Tigers recovered just outside of the end zone near the goal line.

First down brought Winslett with the rushing attack but Holliday remained in position to make the quick stop resulting in no gain on the play. Mason Drummond and Tyler Lolley made the tackle on Kingsbury on second down after a five yard gain. Facing third down and five, Kingsbury got the call to carry the ball again and fought his way over his left tackle to reach the 23-yard line before Smith and Rutledge could bring him down for the stop. With a new set of downs, Price continued to call on Kingsbury who was met at the line of scrimmage by Lolley on first down resulting in no gain on the play. Second down brought Lolley on the stop once again for a two yard loss and on third down Kingsbury was met by Smith and Upton after a 1-yard gain leaving the Tigers facing fourth down and long deep in their own territory. Wood dropped back and punted the ball away with Hancock making the fair- catch reception at the Lions 40-yard line.

Stidham took the hand-off up the middle on first down and was met by a host of defenders after a five yard gain as the third quarter of  play came to a close.

Rutledge rambled up the middle with the hand-off on third down but the Lions were penalized for holding moving the ball back to the Lions 45-yard line. On the replay of down, Rutledge took the hand-off once again but was met at the Lions 48-yard line for the stop by Beasley and others setting up third down and twelve for the Lions. M. Stidham took the hand-off out of the backfield and rambled deep down field along the right side line to reach the Tigers 27-yard line but had the ball stripped during the saving tackle with the Tigers recovering the loose ball.

Wood once again dropped back and punted the ball away with Hancock making the reception for the Lions at their 34-yard line.

Rutledge took the hand-off on first down and fought up the middle where he was finally brought down after a 17-yard gain by Elkins, and a host of other angry Tigers. C. Palmer took the pitch back on first down and was met after a 1-yard gain by Elkins for the stop. Hancock relieved A. Palmer as Quarterback and handed the ball off to Rutledge on second down with Rutledge being brought down behind the line of scrimmage by Beasley setting the Lions up with third down and thirteen. Upton got the call to fight for the needed yardage and took the ball over right guard for 11-yards before Austin Bell and others could make the stop. Facing fourth down and two, Rutledge took the ball around the left side of the line of scrimmage following blockers to the 39-yard line to keep the Lions with possession of the ball. First down brought Cannon Alexander over right guard for five yards with Evan Holmes on the tackle for the Tigers. On second down Luke Stidham took the pitch-out from Hancock and was met by Elkins and others for the stop but the Lions were penalized for an illegal procedure. L. Stidham took the ball over the left side of the line of scrimmage with Wood on the tackle for the Tigers near the line of scrimmage. Ethan Nichols relieved Hancock as Quarterback and recovered the loose ball on the exchange on second down setting the Lions up at the 24-yard line. On third down Upton took the pitch-out from Nichols but was met immediately in the backfield by a host of Tigers for the stop. Facing fourth down and eleven, L. Stidham took the hand-off but was brought down in the backfield by Bell resulting in the ball going over to the Tigers on downs.

With the snap of the ball the Tigers Quarterback took a knee ending the game.  The Lions exited the field with another Region 6 victory and remains unbeaten on the season. The team will have an open date this Fridaynight but will face their cross county rivals, the Berry Wildcats in Berry on Friday, October 3. The game will be another Regional contest and will begin at 7p.m.

Comments from Head Coach Lamar Harris:
"Overall I thought we played our game plan. We had placed and emphasis on controlling the game early in the contest and I feel as thought we did that. Although we did have several mistakes on the offensive side of the game and we've just got to buckle down and get those issues under control or we're going to find ourselves in a position we don't want to be facing. It's something we can control and it's something we are going to work on during our practices this week because we know what lies ahead for our schedule. I am pleased with the effort by the guys as well as the efforts from the younger guys who got playing time tonight. We have a tough season left ahead and our Region play remains strong. There's lots of work remaining, both as players and coaches. I just want the guys to savor this win and move forward with preparations for what lies ahead with our team goals."
