The Hub Junior Varsity visited the Titans of Holy Spirit on Monday night, September 20th to kick-off their regular season.  The Lions received the opening kick-off from the Titans to start the game.  Lion Quarterback Vess Benton led his team down field quickly moving the ball deep inside the Titan red-zone but the drive stalled near the 10-yard line, turning the ball over on downs to Holy Spirit.

The Titan offense depended solely on the running game with their first possession, with their signal-caller handing the ball off to the same player on all three downs before being forced to punt the ball away to the Lions.  First down brought the runner up the middle where Gabe Sttidham and Kamron Smith made the stop for the Lions.  On second down, the Titan ball carrier rushed around the left side of the line of scrimmage where he was met by Nathan Young after only a 2-yard gain.  The  same Titan was called upon to rush with the ball on third down but Young and a host of Lion defenders were there to make the stop to force the Titans to punt the ball away on fourth down.   Facing fourth down and 6, the Titans punted the ball back to the Lions who set up their offensive front at their own 48-yard line.

First down brought Benton on the passing attack attempting to connect with Austin Palmer but the ball fell incomplete.  Benton called his own number on second down and rushed up field to the Titan 43-yard before a host of defenders were able to make the stop.  Facing third down and 1, Benton again rushed with the carry and picked up the first down at the 36-yard line.  With the snap of the ball on the new possession of downs, the Lions were given additional yardage after Holy Spirit was penalized for jumping off-sides.  Facing first down and 5, Benton went back to the air attack attempting to connect with Young but the pass was incomplete setting up second down.  Brandon Pinkard took the hand-off from Benton and scrambled his way straight up the middle for a 1-yard gain.  Facing third down and 4 at the 30-yard line, Benton again called his own number and rushed around the left side of the line of scrimmage gaining enough yardage out to the 25-yard line setting up another possession for the Lion offense.  On first down Pinkard took the hand-off and bounced his way up the middle for a 3-yard gain as the first quarter of play came to an end.

On second down, Young keep his presence on the field known and rushed around the left side line for a 6-yard gain before a sole Titan defender was able to run him down for the stop.  Facing third down and 3-yards at the 18-yard line, Benton called on Pinkard who rushed up the middle again where he was met by a stiff wall of Titan defenders forcing a fumble on the take-down, with the Titans recovering the loose ball near their own 10-yard line.

Returning to the offensive side of the game, the Titans decided to stick with the rushing attack and on first down the Titan ball carrier was met immediately at the line of scrimmage by Kris Parson who made a big stop for the Lion defense after the Titan ball carrier was stopped for no gain on the play.  Second down brought misery for the young Titans as the ball carrier returned the favor to the Lions by fumbling the ball away on the exchange with the Lions recovering the loose ball deep in the Titan's territory.

First down brought Benton with the rushing attack moving the ball to the 3-yard line after a 7-yard gain.  Facing second down and goal, Pinkard rushed up the middle but was met for the stop by a host of upset defenders.  Determined to find pay-dirt, the Lion's Quarterback Benton took the snap and sneaked into the end zone behind the excellent blocking of his defensive front line.  On the PAT, Benton connected with Stidham for the two-point conversion giving the Lions the first points of the evening.

Tyler Wright booted the ensuing kick to the Titan 29-yard line setting up the Titan offense.  The Titan coaching staff elected to continue rushing the same ball carrier they had previously called on to attack the Lion defense.  First down brought the Titan rusher around the left side scrambling down field to the 40-yard line where a host of Lions made the stop.  With a new set of downs, the Titans were pushed back after a penalty flag for off-sides, setting up a replay of downs at the 35-yard line.  The Lions returned the favor and jumped off-sides on the replay moving the ball back to the original marker.  With the snap of the ball, the Titan ball carrier rushed around the right side of the line of scrimmage gaining only 3-yards before Young made the tackle.  Facing second down and 7 at their own 43-yard line, the Titan's decided to attack the left side but Benton was there to make the hit and stop for the Lions.  After measurement the Titan's were determined to have enough yardage for a new set of downs.  The Titan ball carrier took the hand-off and rushed around the right side before cutting back across field and scrambling up the middle where Wright brought him down just shy of the 22-yard line.  Sticking with the same ball carrier, the Titan's were determined to find the end zone, but the Lion defense was determined otherwise as Hayden Norris and a host of Lion defenders brought him down after a 1-yard gain.  Facing second down and 9 at the 21-yard line, the same Titan took the direct snap and rushed to the 6-yard line where Pinkard made the saving stop for the Lion defense.  The Titans were penalized on first down moving the ball back to the 11-yard line.  The Titan's stuck with the same rushing attack with the ball being snapped directly to the same player as earlier in the drive but Benton, Stidham and Smith were waiting patiently for the take-down after a 3-yard gain.  On second down the Titan ball carrier was met by Norris in the backfield for a 1-yard loss.  Facing third down and 9, the same Titan who had been utilized through out the whole drive took the direct snap and fought his way across the goal line for a touchdown.  On the PAT, the Titans were penalized moving the ball back an additional 5-yards.  Sticking with the Titan whom had earlier fought his way across the goal line for the score, the Titan coaching staff called upon him to find the end zone again for the two point conversion.  The plan didn't work because the Lions took a strong defensive stand and held him out of the end zone with a take-down prior to crossing the goal line.

The Titan's kicker sent the ensuing kick deep to the Lion's 24-yard line but time expired on the half before the Lions could organize a drive down field.  Two plays after the kick,  the game clock buzzer sounded and the Lions took an 8-6 lead to the half time break.

Wright's kick to open the second half of play was fielded at the 42-yard line where the Titan offense mustered determined to power their way down field to remorse the Lions earlier goal line stand on the two point conversion attempt.  First down brought Titan Quarterback handing the ball off with the rushing attack coming up the middle but Pinkard and a host of defenders answered for the stop and a 1-yard loss.  Young and Norris burst their way into the backfield on second down bringing the Titan ball carrier to the ground for an additional 2-yard loss.  On third down, Parson and Mason Drummond met the ball carrier at the line of scrimmage for the stop after a 1-yard gain to bring up fourth down and 9 for the Titan's offense.  With a direct snap to the ball carrier the Titan's were hoping to catch the Lion defenders off guard but the ball carrier was met immediately at the line of scrimmage by a host of Lions to make the stop and turn the ball over on downs to the Lions.

With great field position deep on the Titan's end of the playing field, Benton again called his own number and rushed around the right side of the line of scrimmage picking up 8-yards before being dragged down.  Facing second down and 2, the Lions lost the ball on the exchange, but Benton immediately fell on the loose ball, keeping the ball in possession of the Lion offense. With third down and 13 facing the Lions, Benton intended to utilize the passing attack, but when he determined that his receivers were covered he pulled the ball down and fought his way up the middle for a first down at the Titan 27-yard line.  With a new set of downs, the Lions jumped off-sides.  On the replay of downs, the Titan's returned the favor and jumped off-sides to revert the ball back to the original line of scrimmage.  Pinkard took the hand-off from Benton on first down and rushed around the right side where he was brought down at the 6-yard line by a sole defender who saved the touchdown.  On first down, Benton attempted to pass into the end zone but the ball intended for Palmer fell incomplete.  Benton then rushed around the outside down the right side line where he was shoved out of bounds just beyond the 5-yard line to set up third down and goal.  On a keeper, Benton reached the end zone for a 5-yard rushing touchdown with 2.12 remaining in the third quarter of play.  On the PAT, Benton handed the ball off to Pinkard who fought his way over the right guard into the end zone giving the Lions a 16-6 lead with time ticking away in the third quarter of play.

Wright's kick was fielded at the 34-yard line to set-up the Titan offense.  First down brought the Titan rusher around the right side of the line of scrimmage where Pinkard and Drummond made the stop for the Lions after no-gain.  Second down brought more frustration as the pitch back didn't work on the Lion defense with the Titan rusher being brought down in the backfield by Justin Hancock, Austin Henderson and a host of other defenders for a loss of 4-yards.  Third down made up for the loss, as the direct snap to the rusher turned out to be a passing attack with a completion to the Titan Quarterback who had fought his way deep down field to the Lion 45-yard line where the pass completion was made to set up first down for the Titan's.

On first down the Lion's were penalized for jumping off-sides.  With a replay of downs the Titan's went back to their rushing attack and the ball carrier scrambled up the middle where McKain Hubbert, Jacob Stovall and a host of defenders made the stop.  Facing second down and 3, the same ball carrier fought his way over the right side of the line of scrimmage where Hubbert and Norris brought him down right at the first down marker.  After measurement the Titan's were continuing their fight to move the ball down field but Wright and host made the stop on the ball carrier on first down after a 3-yard gain.  Pinkard and Wright made the stop on second down forcing third down and 7 on the Titan offense.  Following the rushing attempt stop by Stidham and Drummond on third down, the Titan's found themselves facing fourth down and 6 at the Lion 26-yard line.  The Titan's signal caller attempted to gain the needed yardage with a keeper but Pinkard, Henderson and Drummond made the stop forcing the ball over on downs to the Lions.

On first down, Benton handed the ball off to Young who fought off defenders making his way out to the 35-yard line where he was brought down just before breaking loose into the Titan backfield.  First down brought the Lion ball carrier up the middle for additional yardage and on second down the Lions were penalized moving the ball back to the 35-yard line.  On the replay of downs, Benton attempted a pass connection with Wright over the middle but the ball was overthrown.  Benton then rushed with a keeper around the right side where he was met for the stop after a 1-yard gain.  Facing fourth down and 11 at their own 35-yard line, Benton went deep with a pass and connected with Wright who stumbled toward the goal line picking up additional yardage before falling to the ground at the 5-yard line.  First down brought another pass connection with Benton calling on Young who was met for the stop after a 1-yard gain.  Pinkard was met in the backfield for a 1-yard loss on second down and third down brought Benton attempting to connect with Peyton McDonald in the end zone but the pass was broken up by a Titan defender.  Facing fourth down and goal, Benton went to the air again and connected with Young who made a diving catch for the touchdown reception after the ball was tipped by the Titan defender.  On the PAT, the Lions had problems with the snap and the score stood 22-6 with only 35.2 seconds remaining in the game.

After Wright's kick was fielded at the 26-yard line, time ran out on the Titans before they were able to manage a successful drive late in the game, although they did manage to move the ball across mid-field with a deep pass on third down and 6 from their own 30-yard line.  With 3.6 seconds remaining on the clock, the Titan Quarterback went deep down field but Peyton McDonald stepped in front of the pass and intercepted the ball giving the Lions possession with only 3.6 seconds remaining on the game clock.

The Lion Junior Varsity secured the win and will host the Phillips Junior Varsity Bears on Monday, September 27 at 7pm at Wiley Hollingsworth Stadium.
