On Friday night the Hubbertville Lions visited Hackleburg to participate in their pre-season jamboree game. Gone were 11 seniors who graduated from last years team along with 11 other players who for different reasons had not returned to the team roster. Team captains for the Lions were Dax Benton and Justin Hancock.
The Lions won the coin toss and elected to receive the opening kick with Benton and Caleb Palmer lining up deep to receive the ball. Comments from Head Coach Lamar Harris:
"Well our overall effort tonight was really good and promising for this young team. Although we did make a ton of mistakes, we kind of expected some of those mistakes with us having to play so many new players in different positions. The team had early problems starting with bad snaps and not being able to make the ball recovery on our fumbles. We had the two excellent opportunities to score deep in their territory, but we didn't manage to capitalize on either opportunity. We had the blocked punt down inside their red-zone and we should have scored there but we didn't. I think the guys found themselves somewhat off guard in that position and got themselves a little jittery and worked up being in that position early in the season. That was disheartening, that we weren't able to come out of there with a score but we will learn from those mistakes. This team will have to snap back from this game and be ready to play ball as the regular season opens next week. Practice will be beneficial as we can share some things which we witnessed tonight in our practices over the coming week. I know these players will improve and are very much capable of making progress as the season moves forward. It's always good to get the first game out of the way and let the guys who haven't had the opportunity to take the playing field together giving them the chance to mold with each other as teammates. There was a good crowd of fans who followed us up tonight and that's always a benefit of encouragement for our guys to witness, especially our younger guys who haven't had the opportunity of playing time on the field."
