The Hub Lion Jr. Varsity welcomed the Jr. Bears of Phillips to Wiley Hollingsworth Stadium on Monday, September 27.

Following the coin toss the Lions kicking team entered the field.  Tyler Wright kicked the ball off to the visiting Bears get the game underway, starting the game clock ticking off time.   The Bear receiver fielded the ball and advanced little yardage prior to Brandon Pinkard making the quick tackle for the Lions.  Following a penalty flag against the Bears on first down, the Bear offense was held by the Lion defense.  The Bears were forced to punt the ball away to the Lions on fourth down facing a needed six yards to keep possession.  Gabe Stidham was back to receive for the Lions, but the Lions were penalized for an off sides penalty giving the Bears a fourth down and 1-yard situation.  The Bears stuck with the punting decision and Tyler Crumpton booted the ball away to Stidham who was met immediately by Matthew Martin for the take down at the 25-yard line.

The Lion offense led by Quarterback Vess Benton took to the field and on first down gained an additional five yards, benefit of an off sides penalty committed by the Bears.  On first down, Benton handed the ball off to Tyler Wright who rushed around the right side to the Lion 35-yard line for another first down.  Benton on a keeper rushed forward and was tripped up at the line of scrimmage for no gain on first down.  Second down brought Benton with another keeper rushing around the right side of the line to the Bear 43-yard line gaining yardage for another first down for the Lions.  Sticking with the Quarterback rushing, Benton then took the ball around the left side of the offensive line deep into the Bears red-zone at the 15-yard line before being stopped by Ryan Brown and Lane Wells.  With another set of downs to work with Benton went to the air attack passing the ball to Nathan Young who advanced to the 9-yard line.  Brandon Pinkard took the hand-off from Benton on second down and rushed up the middle where he was stopped just short of the first down marker by a host of angry Bear defenders.  Facing third down and inches, Pinkard was met at the line of scrimmage but managed to fight his way forward to gain the first down with the nose of the ball resting just beyond the 5-yard line.  With the power of rushing the ball straight at the Bear defense working for the Lion offense, Benton reverted to the passing game and connected with Gabe Stidham for the first points of the evening lighting up the scoreboard in favor of the home team Lions.  On the PAT, Benton was brought down behind the line of scrimmage by Tyler Harris to leave the score standing at 6-0 with 3:00 remaining in the first quarter of play.

Tyler Wright's ensuing kick was fielded at the 24-yard line by Martin who advanced to the 44-yard line where Wright himself made the tackle for the Lions.  On first down, Martin on a keeper rushed up the middle where Coby Dozier and Stidham made the stop for the Lions.  Second down brought Martin down behind the line of scrimmage for the first sack of the evening compliments of Austin Bourland, giving the Bears a 5-yard loss.  Facing third down and 14-yards at the 38-yard line, Martin went to the air campaign and connected with Ryan Brown who was tackled by Peyton McDonald just beyond mid-field to set up fourth down and 3-yards for the Bears.  On fourth down Martin was sacked again, this time with the rushing attack by Blayke Hill who brought him down at the Bear 35-yard line.

The Lions took over on downs at the Bear 35-yard line following the huge sack by Hill.  Benton went to the air on first down connecting with Pinkard who advanced for an eight yard gain.  On second down Benton called his own number picking up yardage down field to the 22-yard line as the first quarter came to a close.  With another set of downs, Benton handed the ball off to Pinkard who was brought down in the backfield for a two yard loss.  Second down brought Benton around the left side of the line fighting his way to the 12-yard line before Crumpton could make the saving tackle.  Reverting back to Pinkard and the rushing attack on first down proved that the Bears were not going to allow Pinkard an opportunity to reach the end zone up the middle.  After the rushing attack by Pinkard gained no additional yardage, Benton tired to connect with a pass to Pinkard but the ball fell incomplete.  Facing third down and 10-yards at the 12-yard line, Benton zipped a pass into the end zone to Wright who managed to come down with the ball although he was being defended with double coverage by the Bear defense.  The PAT attempt, kick by Hill sailed high and didn't have enough yardage to reach the uprights.  With 5:35 remaining in the first half of play the Lions built to their lead by a score of 12-0.

Wrights kick to the Bear's was fielded at the 41-yard line by Brown to set up the possession for the Bear offense.  Bourland and Reed Jones rushed across the line of scrimmage on first down bringing Martin to the ground for another sack and a loss of 11-yards.  Second down brought Martin with a passing attempt but the ball fell incomplete with Kamron Smith under coverage for the Lions.  Facing third down and long yardage, Martin continued the passing attack and connected with Crumpton who cut to the outside and back to the middle of the field racing down the left side line for the touchdown.  The PAT attempt, a pass to Crumpton worked perfect for the Bears and the score stood 12-8 in favor of the home-standing Lions.

Martin's ensuing kick was fielded by Bourland at the 45-yard line where the Lion offense returned with Benton under center.  First down brought Young around the left side to the side lines where he was shoved out of bounds at the Bear 49-yard line.  On second down, Benton on a quarterback draw advanced to the Bears 49-yard line before being brought down by Crumpton and Martin.  With a new set of downs, Young continued the pursuit and rushed over the left side of the line of scrimmage for an additional 6-yards before Harris made the stop for the Bears.  Facing second down and 4-yards, Benton connected thru the air with Austin Palmer who zipped his way down field but a penalty flag against the Lions reverted the ball back to the 44-yard line.  Benton stuck with Palmer and connect with him on second down and 13-yards, with Palmer racing his way down the right side line to the 20-yard line to gain another first down for the Lion offense.  Benton went thru the air again, this time trying to connect with Pinkard near the goal line but the ball fell incomplete.  Facing second down and 10-yards, Young took the hand-off from Benton and rushed up the middle to the end zone giving the Lions six more points with the clock showing 1:58 left in the first half of play.  The PAT attempt, Benton attempted to connect with Young in the end zone but the ball fell incomplete.

Juan Alcarez fielded Wright's kick at the 34-yard line setting up the Bear offense.  Martin connected with a pass over the middle to Brown on first down moving the Bears down field to the Lion 49-yard line before Austin Palmer could make the tackle for the Lions.  Martin continued the passing attack and attempted a pass connection with Brown but the pass was overthrown with coverage by Peyton McDonald.  Sticking with the passing attack, Martin went to Brown again on second down and connected moving the ball to the Lion 46-yard line where McDonald made the stop once again for the Lions.  Facing third down and 5-yards, Martin continued attacking with Brown on the receiving end, this time picking up yardage to the 34-yard line before Benton and Wright were able to make the tackle for the Lion defense.  Sticking with Brown, Martin attempted another pass but the ball was overthrown with Stidham under coverage for the Lions.  Martin threw another incomplete pass on second down attempting to connect with Crumpton with Palmer covering for the Lions.  Third down brought a complete pass to Crumpton  who scrambled his way down to the 20-yard line before a host of Lion defenders were able to make the stop.  Following a time-out by the Lions, Martin hooked-up with Crumpton on another pass and Crumpton found the end zone with only 16.1 seconds showing on the clock.  The PAT attempt brought the Bears closer to the Lions as Martin connected with a pass to Brown in the corner of the end zone leaving the score at 18-16 in favor of the Lions.

Reed Jones fielded Martins kick at the 36-yard line and advanced to the Lion 43-yard line to set up the Lion offense with time quickly expiring in the first half of play.  On first down, Benton attempted a passing connection with Stidham but the pass was incomplete.  On second down, the Bears were penalized for an off-sides infraction setting up second down and 5-yards at the Lion 48-yard line.  Benton handed the ball off to Young who fought down field to the 38-yard line before Chris Grace could make the saving stop.  First down brought another passing attack from Benton but the pass intended for Young was incomplete as time expired on the half.

Returning to the field after the half-time break the Lions received the kick-off from Martin and set-up first down at their own 32-yard line.  Wright picked up eight yards on the first down carry but on second down the Lions fumbled the ball on the exchange with Wright recovering the loose ball at the 28-yard line.  Facing third down and 13-yards, Benton on a keeper rushed up field to regain seven of the loss yards to bring up fourth down and 6-yards.  Kevin Hubbert was called on the field to punt the ball away to the Bears.  Hubberts punt was received at the 30-yard line by Martin who rambled to the Lion 38-yard line where Hubbert himself made the saving tackle.  Martin on a keeper rushed up the middle for a 7-yard gain where he was met by Stidham and Wright for the stop.  Reverting to the passing attack, Martin attempted to connect with Crumpton but the pass was incomplete.  Sticking with the passing attack, Martin went back to Crumpton and connected for a first down at the 23-yard line.  Martin went to the air again connecting with Grace over the middle to move the ball deep inside the Lion red zone before Coby Dozier could make the stop.  Facing second down and 4-yards at the 17-yard line, Martin continued the passing attack but the ball to Crumpton fell incomplete.  On third down, Martin went over the middle to Crumpton with the reception complete to pick up another set of downs for the Bears.  Facing first down and goal, Martin's pass to Brown fell incomplete.  Sticking with the attack thru the air, Martin again went to Brown but over threw the ball out of the end zone.  On third down, Martin went to Brown again in the end zone but once again the ball fell incomplete.  Determined to make the match work against the Lion defense, Martin stuck with his intent to connect with Brown in the end zone on fourth down, but as in the previous attempts the ball fell incomplete near the goal line and the Lions took over on downs at their own 7-yard line.

Benton connected with Wright over the middle on first down for a new set of downs at the 30-yard line.  Young took the hand-off on first down and rushed for an additional 8-yard gain before Grace could make the stop.  Facing second down and 2-yards, Benton on a keeper advanced to the right side lines out to the Bear 49-yard line where Lane Wells made the stop, but not before Benton picked up another set of downs for the Lions offense.  First down brought Young with the hand-off around the left side for a 4-yard gain.  On second down the Lions were penalized for illegal procedure moving the ball back to the 43-yard line.  Benton was brought down behind the line of scrimmage for the sack by Grace setting up third down and 12-yards at the Bear 44-yard line.  A penalty flag against the Bears for jumping off-sides reverted 5-yards for the Lions.  Facing third down and 8-yards, Grace raced into the backfield again to sack Benton for an additional yardage loss as time expired on the third quarter of play.

Facing fourth down and 15-yards, Hubbert got the call to return to the field and punt the ball away to the Bears.  Hubberts punt rolled to the 20-yard line where the Bear offense returned to the line.  Martin on a keeper advanced up the middle where Jones and Stidham made the tackle.  With a first down at the 36-yard line, Martin went back to the passing attack and connected with Crumpton who rushed down to the Lion 46-yard line where Stidham chased him down to save the touchdown for the Lions.  Martin again passed the ball down field connecting with Brown who rushed to the 38-yard line before being brought down by Dozier and Stidham.  Martin attempted another pass connection with Crumpton but found himself releasing the ball way early as pressure for a sack was brought on by Hill.  On third down, Martin connected with Crumpton who fought his way to the 30-yard line where a host of angry Lions made the stop.  First down brought another passing attempt to Brown but the ball fell incomplete setting up second down.  Martin on a keeper advanced to the 2-yard line and fumbled the ball with the Lions Benton recovering the ball just shy of the goal line.

The Lions took over deep in their own territory and on first down Benton attempted to give himself some breathing room but Martin brought him down for a 1-yard loss.  On second down, Benton on a keeper advanced up the middle to the 5-yard line.  The Lions were penalized with the next snap for off-sides and on replay of the down, Benton was sacked by Martin near the 4-yard line.  Hubbert was called upon to punt the ball away with Crumpton back to receive for the Bears.  Crumpton fielded the ball near the 30-yard line and quickly zipped his way to the end zone for the quick score with 3:19 remaining in the game the Bears had taken the first lead of the night 22-18.  On the PAT attempt, the ball was snapped high and over the head of Martin.

Martin's ensuing kick was fielded at the 39-yard line by Palmer who advanced to the 44-yard line to bring the Lion offense back to the line.  On first down, Benton attempted a pass connection with Wright but the pass was incomplete with Martin and Brown on double coverage for the Bears.  Benton on a keeper advanced along the right side lines and out of bounds at the Bear 42-yard line.  Young took the hand-off on first down but was met immediately by Crumpton for no gain.  Going deep with the next passing attempt, Benton was intercepted by Crumpton with the Bears taking over at their own 14-yard line.

Crumpton took the hand-off on first down and gained 2-yards before Brandon Smith made the stop for the Lions.  Martin on a keeper advanced around the right side where he was met for the stop by a mob of angry Lions.  Facing third down and 4-yards at the 20-yard line, Martin rushed up the middle but Benton and a host of Lion defenders made the stop to set up fourth down and 2-yards.  Crumpton punted the ball back to the Lions with Stidham standing back to receive for the Lions.  The Bears were penalized on the punt attempt and Crumpton was backed up an additional 5-yards and punted the ball away to Stidham who was brought down immediately after receiving the ball at the 40-yard line.  First down brought Benton up the middle where he was met by Crumpton for the stop.  Benton went to the passing attack on second down and connected with Pinkard who fought his way to the 20-yard line before being tackled.  On first down, Benton went to the air again, this time connecting with Stidham who dove into the end zone for the score.  On the PAT attempt, Benton was brought down behind the line of scrimmage by Martin and with 47.8 seconds remaining in the game the Lions had regained the lead 24-22.

Wright's kick was muffed on the kick-off as his foot just barely edged the ball knocking it off the kicking tee on what was to be an on-side kick.  The Bear offense had one more opportunity and was fired up having the ball in their possession at the Lion 40-yard line.  On first down, Martin connected with Crumpton who fought his way to the 33-yard line where Young made the tackle.  Second down brought the crowd to their feet as Bourland and Hill fought their way across the line of scrimmage and sacked Martin near the 40-yard line.  On third down Martin was forced to throw the ball down field early thanks to pressure once again from Bourland and Hill.  With only 21.5 seconds remaining on the clock the Bears had one more down left.  Facing fourth down and 10-yards at the 40-yard line, Martin attempted a connection with Crumpton but the ball fell incomplete with Jones on coverage for the Lions.

The Lions took over on downs at their own 40-yard line with 17.7 seconds remaining in the game.  With the snap of the ball Benton took a knee and time expired on the game clock giving the Jr Varsity Lions the hard fought victory by a score of 24-22.

The Lion Jr. Varsity will host the South Lamar Stallions on Monday, October 4th at Wiley Hollingsworth Stadium.  Game time is 6:30pm.
