The Hubbertville Lions football team had been forewarned that their homecoming game against the Meek Tigers was expected to be a hard fought battle demanding a disciplined team to remain focused until the final whistle blew to end of the game.  Coach Lamar Harris addressed his team with those concerns on Thursday night during the athletic boosters senior honors night.  He forewarned his players that he expected the game to be an all night cat-fight with both teams shouldering a strong determination to walk off the field with a key victory in Region 5 play.  The Lions were first to light up the scoreboard after receiving the opening kick.  Dillon Tucker received the kick from Dylan Cleghorn and advanced to the 17-yard line setting up the Lion offense.  After an off-sides penalty against the Tigers the Lions, Aaron Dillard took the hand-off from Jake McCollum and gained yardage to the 31-yard line to give the Lions another set of downs.  Dylan Dillard was stopped behind the line on first down but McCollum connected thru the air with Hunter O'Mary on second down with O'Mary advancing to mid-field.  Dillon Tucker took the hand-off on first down and advanced 9-yards to the Tiger 41-yard line.  On second down the Tigers were penalized for an off-sides penalty giving the Lions additional yardage and setting up first down at the 36-yard line.  A. Dillard and D. Tucker carried the ball on the next two downs advancing the Lions to the 29-yard line.  On first down A. Dillard rushed over right tackle for a 3-yard gain.  Second down brought D. Dillard rushing over left tackle for a 2-yard gain setting up third down and 5-yards near the 20-yard line.  D. Tucker took the hand-off from McCollum and fought his way to the 17-yard line, bringing up fourth down and 2-yards in the Tiger red zone.  A. Dillard was called upon to advance the ball deeper in the red zone and with the snap of the ball he scrambled his way around the right line of scrimmage before cutting back inside to the end zone giving the Lions the first score of the evening.  Dillard continued putting points on the scoreboard for the Lions as his kick was perfect on the PAT attempt.  With 5:45 remaining in the first quarter the Lions were on the scoreboard.

Landon Miller's ensuing kick sailed out of bounds at the Tiger 43-yard line where Jackson Murphey brought his offensive front to the field.  Two plays later from the Lion 46-yard line, Murphey connected over the middle with a short pass to D. Cleghorn who raced into the end zone.  The PAT, kick by Alston Wolfe was straight down the middle of the goals and the Tigers had responded quickly to tie the game with only 46 seconds taken off the game clock.

D. Cleghorn booted the ball deep into Lion territory on the ensuing kick with the ball rolling out of bounds at the Lion 15-yard line.  First down brought A. Dillard rushing up the middle where he was met by Cleghorn for the stop after at the 24-yard line.  On second down, D. Dillard was met at the line of scrimmage for no gain.  A. Dillard got the call to carry on third down and rushed around the right side of the line of scrimmage for a 6-yard gain giving the Lions another first down.  Sticking with A. Dillard on the rushing attack, the Lions moved the ball to the 36-yard line where D. Tucker rushed over right guard gaining yardage to the 41-yard line keeping the drive alive.  First down brought A. Dillard with the carry but the Meek defensive line stood ground allowing no gain on the play.  The Tiger defense continued the hold allowing D. Dillard only 1-yard with his carry on second down to bring the Lions to third down and 9-yards at their own 42-yard line.  McCollum went to the air attack on third down and connected with A. Dillard who rushed across mid-field to the Tiger 48-yard line to keep the Lion offense on the field.  D. Dillard rushed over left tackle on first gaining 9-yards on the carry with Grace Caleb making the stop just short of the first down yardage marker.  McCollum was sacked for a 5-yard loss on second down setting up third down and 6-yards at the Tiger 44-yard line.  A. Dillard took the hand-off from McCollum and rushed around the right side, cutting back across the middle to the 35-yard line before being tackled by Tyler Hallmark.  On first down, D. Dillard rushed over left tackle and on second down, A. Dillard  rushed over right tackle to set up third down and 2-yards at the Tiger 27-yard line.  D. Dillard.  With a new set of downs, the Tigers continued with the ground game and C. Hallmark was met at the line of scrimmage by Miller and Ellis for the stop.  Reverting back to the passing attack on second down brought no comfort as Murphey's pass to Cleghorn fell incomplete over the middle.  On third down, Murphey continued the passing attack and connected with Cleghorn who advanced to the 25-yard line before Miller made the stop.  First down brought, Austin Wolfe around the right side with the rushing attempt but Mikey McCraw and Aldridge were there for the stop after a 3-yard gain.  The next three snaps of the ball brought penalty flags, on second down Murphey connected thru the air with Cleghorn who ran out of bounds but holding against the Tigers moved the ball back to the 39-yard line.  On the replay of downs, the Lions were penalized for off-sides moving the ball back to the 34-yard line.  Facing second down and 19-yards, the Tigers were penalized for grounding the ball moving the line of scrimmage back to the Lion 48-yard line.  On third down, Murphey  connected on a short passing route with Cleghorn but Miller was there for the stop with no-gain for the Tigers.  Facing fourth down and 33-yards, Murphey connected again with Cleghorn but the needed yardage could not be gained as D. The Lion offense returned to the field but with only seconds remaining McCollum allowed time to expire with the Lions taking a 14-7 half-time lead into the locker room.

Dillard took the ball up the middle to the Tiger 31-yard line where C. Hallmark made the tackle.  First down brought A. Dillard with the rushing attack straight up the middle of the field and to the end zone fighting off would be tacklers for what appeared to be another Lion touchdown, but the ball was ruled to have been batted from Dillards arms just before he crossed the goal line.  The officials ruled that the ball was knocked from his arms and rolled out of the back of the end zone prior to him reaching the end zone, therefore a touchback was awarded.  The play ended the third quarter setting up fourth quarter with the Tigers possession at the 20-yard line.  On first down, Wolfe attempted to gain yardage around the right side of the line of scrimmage but O'Mary, McCraw and A. Dillard made the stop with no gain.  Murphey hooked-up on a pass connection with Hiller on second down with Hiller racing down field along the left side lines to the end zone changing the momentum of the game with 11:00 minutes remaining.  The Tigers opted for the two point conversion with Murphey connecting with Wolfe in the end zone to bring the game back to a tie at 21-21.

Comments from Coach Harris:

"Offensively we played really good, probably the best we have played in quite some time.  I'm proud of the backs, they really ran hard and stayed focused tonight.  Our passing plays helped us out some tonight as well.  Defensively we played good but we did manage to give up some big plays in the passing game.  That's something we're going to have to continue to focus on.  We managed to disrupt Meeks game plan early and we stuck with our game plan and stayed focused.  We could have and should have scored two additional touchdowns had we not of had the unfortunate turn-overs at the goal line.  I'm proud of the win especially for the Senior guys on homecoming.  We still have lots of improvement remaining as a team."

The Lions will travel to Berry to face their cross county Region 5 rivalry Wildcats on Friday night.  Game time is 7pm.
