Hubbertville's Junior Varsity traveled to Bear Creek on Monday night to make a visit on the Junior Bears of Phillips High. The game got underway with Hub's McKain Hubbert booting the opening kick-off to the 27-yard line where the Bear's receiver bobbled the ball but managed to gain control and scamper out to the 31-yard line before being met by a host of Lion defenders. First down brought Phillips with a passing attack but the ball fell incomplete. Sticking with the passing attack on second down gained no better results as Dakota Dozier and Austin Bourland plowed across the line into the backfield putting pressure on the Bears leader resulting in another incomplete pass. Determined to make the passing game work, the Bears quarterback connected with his receiver on third down but Tyler Wright and Gabe Stidham was on the spot bringing the receiver to the ground immediately after a 5-yard gain. Facing fourth down and 5-yards, the Bears punted the ball away with Gabe Stidham back to receive the kick. Stidham made the reception but officials whistled the play dead for a penalty against the Bears, requiring a re-kick. Once again Gabe Stidham was back to receive but the ball rolled dead at the Lion 24-yard line.

Quarterback Vess Benton brought his offensive front to the line of scrimmage and on first down called his own number to advance around the right side for a 6-yard gain. On second down, Nathan Young got the call to rush the ball and advanced to the 37-yard line for another first down. Benton handed the ball off to Dakota Dozier on first down with Dozier fighting off would be tacklers advancing the ball to the 44-yard line for an 8-yard gain. Facing second down and 2-yards, Nathan Young rushed around the left side of the line of scrimmage out to mid-field to give the Lions another set of downs. First down brought Brandon Pinkard up the middle fighting off tacklers for a 3-yard gain. On second down the Lions were penalized for illegal procedure setting up second down and 12-yards at the Lion 47-yard line. Vess Benton again rushed for the attack and advanced around the left side lines where he was brought down by the Bear defender at the 35-yard line. Reverting to the passing game, Vess Benton attempted to connect with Gabe Stidham but the pass fell incomplete. Once again Vess Benton rushed with a keeper over the left side of the line of scrimmage and was forced out of bounds after a 4-yard gain. Facing third down and 6-yards, Nathan Young got the call to carry and rushed around the left side line to the end zone. On the PAT attempt, Vess Benton handed the ball off to Brandon Pinkard who muscled his way into the end zone giving the Lions an early lead 8-0 with 1:47 remaining in the first quarter of play.

McKain Hubbert's ensuing kick was received at the 30-yard line by the bear's receiver who was met immediately for the stop by Blayke Hill at the Bears 38-yard line. On first down the Bears went to the air with the pass falling incomplete. Second down brought a rushing attack around the right side but McKain Hubbert, Dakota Dozier and Nathan Young were defending for the stop at the line of scrimmage. Reverting back to the passing attack, the Bears quarterback once again was unable to connect with his receiver setting up fourth down and 10-yards at the 38-yard line of the Bears. Back to receive the punt was Gabe Stidham who advanced the ball around the right side to the Lion 48-yard line before being met by the defenders for the stop.

First down brought Dakota Dozier with the carry up the middle for a 5-yard gain. On second down, Vess Benton with a keeper advanced up the middle for a first down at the Bears 40-yard line. Vess Benton went to the air on first down connecting over the middle with Tyler Wright who rushed his way down to the 9-yard line before being chased down for the tackle. Facing first down and goal, Vess Benton handed the ball off to Tyler Wright who advanced over right guard for a 4-yard gain. Second down brought Nathan Young around the left side where he was stopped at the 1-yard line too set up third down and goal. With the snap of the ball the Lions were in the end zone as Vess Benton handed the ball off to Brandon Pinkard who scored the touchdown by pushing his way into the end zone up the middle. The PAT attempt; a pass from Vess Benton to Austin Palmer was batted down near the goal line to leave the score at 14-0 in favor of the visiting Lions.

McKain Hubbert once again booted the ball down field with the receiver bobbling the ball, but managing to recover for possession at the 30-yard line. On first down the Bears stuck with the passing attack but the ball fell incomplete. Second down brought the Bear signal-caller up the middle with a keeper but Tyler Wright and Dakota Dozier stood ground after an 8-yard gain. On third down the Bears Quarterback was sacked for a 4-yard loss by Mason Drummond and McKain Hubbert. Facing fourth down and 6-yards at their own 34-yard line the Bears elected to pursue the needed yardage. Sticking with the passing attack the Bears Quarterback threw the ball deep down the left side lines where Kamron Smith was under cover for the Lions with the pass out of reach of the intended receiver. With the in completion the ball went over to the Lions on downs.

First down brought Nathan Young rushing around the left side of the line for a 6-yard gain. On second down Young once again advanced the ball picking up an additional yard to set up third down and 3-yards at the Bears 27-yard line. Dakota Dozier was called upon and advanced over the right guard picking up a first down at the 21-yard line. Vess Benton went back to his arm strength on first down but the ball intended for Tyler Wright fell incomplete near the goal line. On second down Vess Benton with a keeper around the left side of the line of scrimmage rushed to the 6-yard line before being stopped. With a first down deep in the Bears red zone, Tyler Wright took the hand-off from Vess Benton and was met near the line of scrimmage for the stop after a 1-yard gain. With time ticking away on the first half of play the Lions elected to use a time out. With 49.1 seconds remaining before half-time, Brandon Pinkard rushed up the middle for a 2-yard pick-up on second down. Pinkard was called upon again to advance the ball rushing over the right side of the line of scrimmage to set up fourth down and goal at the 1-yard line. With time ticking off the clock and only 19.1 seconds remaining, Vess Benton called Brandon Pinkards number again with the end result being a touch down for the Lions. Pinkard took the hand-off and scrambled his way around the backfield fighting off would be tacklers taking the ball across the goal for the score with 12.1 seconds remaining in the first half of play. On the PAT attempt, Vess Benton handed the ball off to Dakota Dozier who fought his way behind blockers into the end zone giving the Lions a larger lead at 22-0.

The ensuing kick by McKain Hubbert was fielded at the 37-yard line by the Bears return man who was met by a host of Lions for the stop at the Bear 45-yard line. First down brought more of the passing attack from the Bears but the pass thrown deep down field was overthrown and incomplete. On second down the Bears signal caller completed a pass to his favorite target over the left side of the line of scrimmage but after the completion the receiver laddered the ball back to another Bear who raced down field untouched for what looked to be a run-away touchdown. But Dakota Dozier and Austin Palmer used their speed to chase the would be scorer down and make the tackle at the 7-yard line denying the touchdown for the Bears as time expired on the half. The Lions went to the half-time break with a 22-0 lead.

Following the half-time break, Austin Palmer fielded the ensuing kick from the Bears kicker at the 34-yard line and advanced to the Bears 40-yard line. First down brought Dakota Dozier with the carry around the right side lines where he was brought down by two defenders to save the touch down run at the 25-yard line. Vess Benton went to the air on first down but his pass intended for Gabe Stidham was dropped. The Bears were penalized for interference giving the Lions first down at the Bear 10-yard line. On first down Brandon Pinkard was brought down in the backfield for a 5-yard loss. Facing second down and 15-yards to the goal, Vess Benton called on Nathan Young for the rushing attempt with Young advancing untouched into the end zone around the left side line. With 6:09 showing on the clock the Lions continued building their lead. The PAT attempt was successful as Nathan Young continued the rushing attack and went straight up the middle behind blockers into the end zone to make the score 30-0.

The Bears receiver fielded McKain Hubberts kick at the 30-yard line and Dakota Dozier, Austin Bourland and McKain Hubbert were quickly down field for the stop at the 40-yard line. First down brought more of the passing attack with a completion for a first down at the Lion 49-yard line. Sticking with the passing attack, the Bears successfully completed another pass setting up second down and 3-yards at the Lion 42-yard line. Continuing with the passing attack the Bears connected once again moving the ball to the end zone for their first score of the evening with 5:23 remaining in the third quarter of play. On the PAT attempt the ball was bobbled on the snap and pressure by Austin Bourland proved to much for the Bears quarterback as Brandon Smith, Gabe Stidham and Tyler Wright brought assisted Austin Bourland in bringing him down deep in the backfield. The score stood at 30-6 in favor of the Lions.

Gabe Stidham fielded the ensuing kick at the 10-yard line after the ball sailed over his head. He successfully returned the ball to the 16-yard line where Vess Benton and the offensive front went back to work. Dakota Dozier got the call on first down rushing up the middle for a 1-yard gain. Second down brought Brandon Pinkard up the middle for a 2-yard gain. On third down Tyler Wright attacked the middle but was met immediately to force McKain Hubbert into the backfield to punt the ball away to the Bears on fourth down. McKain Hubbert's punt sailed to the 38-yard line where the Bear receiver was met immediately by Gabe Stidham, Jacob Stovall, Brandon Smith, and Austin Bourland for the stop.

First down brought more of the passing attack from the Bears but the pass was broken up by Gabe Stidham to set up second down. On second down, the passing attack ran into danger as Tyler Wright intercepted the pass and returned the ball 69-yards untouched to the end zone with 30.3 seconds remaining in the third quarter. The PAT attempt, Vess Benton pass to Justin Hancock was incomplete with the ball thrown low due to pressure from the Bear defenders. The Lions lead had increased 36-6 as the third quarter was coming to a close.

McKain Hubbert's kick was received at the 30-yard line and advanced for 10-yards where Tyler Wright, Dakota Dozier and McKain Hubbert made the stop. First down brought another incomplete pass. On second down the Bears connected with the passing attack moving the ball to the Lion 47-yard line before Nathan Young made the tackle. The Bear signal-caller called his own number on first down and raced around the right side line for a 3-yard gain before Hyden Norris and Justin Hancock made the tackle for the Lions. On second down, with a keeper up the middle the Bears reached the Lion 21-yard line for another set of downs before McKain Hubbert and Mason Drummond made the tackle. First down brought a revert to the passing attack but the ball fell incomplete with Dusty Lowery on coverage for the Lions. Second down brought the Bear quarterback with the carry again but McKain Hubbert, Hayden Norris, Gabe Stidham and a host of Lion defenders managed to make him scrambled around in the backfield for a loss. Third down brought another passing attempt but Kamron Smith was defending for the Lions with the ball falling incomplete. Facing fourth down and long, the Bears connected on the right side line with the receiver making the catch and falling out of bounds with pressure from Justin Hancock on the coverage. With a new set of downs at the 8-yard line the quarterback was sacked with Mason Drummond making the initial contact and assist coming from Austin Henderson, McKain Hubbert and Brandon Smith. Time expired setting up the fourth quarter before another play could be called.

Second down brought another passing attempt but Justin Hancock broke the pass up before the completion could be made near the goal line. Third down brought penalty flags against the Bears moving the ball back to the 20-yard line. On the replay of downs, a reception was made in the right corner of the end zone to give the Bears another score. On the PAT attempt, a pass to the end zone was off the finger tips leaving the Lions with a lead of 36-12 with 7:41 remaining in the game.

Brandon Pinkard fielded the ensuing kick at the 29 yard line and scampered his way across mid-field rushing behind excellent blocking into the end zone. The celebration was short lived as the Lions were penalized during the return moving the ball back to the Lion 24-yard line after walking off the yardage for the penalty. First down brought a new signal caller for the Lions as Austin Palmer relieved Vess Benton at quarterback. Austin Palmer handed the ball off to Brandon Pinkard onn first down with Pinkard rushing around the left side line to gain 9-yards. Austin Palmer was sacked on second down setting up third down and 6-yards for the Lions. On third down Austin Palmer on a keeper advanced the ball up the middle but was met at the line of scrimmage by a host of defenders for no gain. On fourth down the Lions jumped off sides setting up a replay of the down 5-yards deeper. The Lions went for the yardage but the ball fell incomplete turning the ball over to the Bears on downs at the Lion 26-yard line. The Bears were looking for a quick six but the pass fell incomplete on first down. Second down brought the same play but the connection was made on the play giving the Bears another touch down with 4:43 remaining in the game. On the PAT attempt, the same connection did not work as McKain Hubbert put pressure on the quarterback forcing a quick release.

The ensuing kick was fielded at the Lion 18-yard line by Brandon Pinkard and advanced to the 28-yard line where he was met for the stop. First down brought Dakota Dozier with the hand off around the right side lines across mid-field to the Bears 41-yard line before the stop could be made. Vess Benton's pass intended for Peyton McDonald fell incomplete to set up second down. On second down, Nathan Young advanced the ball around the left side line racing to the end zone for what appeared to be another touchdown but officials ruled that he had stepped out of bounds at the 20-yard line. Vess Benton went deep to the end zone with a pass intended for Justin Hancock but the ball fell incomplete. Vess Benton was met at the line of scrimmage on second down for the stop and no gain. On third down Tyler Wright was met at the line of scrimmage for no gain, setting up fourth down and 10-yards for the Lions at the Bears 20-yard line. Vess Benton went to the air again attempting to make the connection with Kamron Smith but the pass fell incomplete turning the ball over to the Bears.

The Bears quarterback called his own number on first down and was met after a 2-yard gain by Hayden Norris and Brandon Smith for the stop. Second down brought another rushing attack by the head signal caller but he managed to reach the 31-yard line before Mason Drummond, McKain Hubbert, Brandon Smith and a host of others made the tackle. With a new set of downs, the Bears reverted to the passing attack with the quarterback connecting with his tallest receiver who raced untouched down the right side line to the end zone with 29.7 seconds remaining in the ball game. Sticking with the same receiver on the PAT attempt didn't work as the ball fell to the ground with Dusty Lowery there to make the play for the Lions. The score stood 36-24 with little time remaining on the game clock.

Justin Hancock fielded the on-side kick at the 43-yard line and the Lions set up to run the time of the game clock. On first down however the Lions were penalized for movement pushing the ball back to the 38-yard line. Brandon Pinkard took the hand off and rushed up the middle where he was met for the stop near the 43-yard line as time expired to end the game. The Lions left the field of play victorious with a 36-24 score over the hosting Bears.

This game ended the Junior Varsity Lions season. The Lions had a great building year with a record of 4 wins and 3 losses. Two of the losses were back to back games against the Lynn Bears and the other loss was to South Lamar. The wins for the Lions came at the expense of Tharptown, Holy Spirit, and two wins versus Phillips of Bear Creek.
