Falling behind early in the first quarter of play proved to be an obstacle which the Hubbertville Lion's could not over-come on Friday night. The Lion's traveled to St. Clair County to pay visit to the Purple Devil's in the first round of the state 1A play-offs.

Both school's senior's represented their teams as captains meeting at mid-field for the coin toss. The night started off on the right track for Hubbertville as the toss was won by the Lion's who elected to receive the opening kick.

Sondre Torp booted the opening kick deep to the 12-yard line where Dillon Tucker returned the ball to the 27-yard line. On the first two plays from scrimmage the Purple Devils were penalized for off-sides moving the ball to the 37-yard line to give the Lion's better field position. Aaron Dillard and Dylan Dillard were utilized to move the ball on first and second down but the stingy defensive front for Ragland wouldn't allow much yardage. Facing fourth down and 6-yards, Hunter O'Mary lined up in the backfield and punted the ball away to Jimmy Brock who made the reception at the 26-yard line advancing to the Devil's 37 before D. Dillard and a host of Lions made the stop.

On first down Nic Daniels took the ball around the right side of the line where he was met by Colby Ellis, A. Dillard and David Aldridge for the stop after a 3-yard gain. Jimmy Brock took the short pass from John Arnold on second down and raced all the way to the 2-yard line where he had the ball stripped from behind by A. Dillard. The Purple Devil's saved the scoring opportunity by recovering the lose ball and with the snap of the ball Daniels was standing in the end zone. The PAT, kick by Torp was good and the Purple Devil's were on the scoreboard with 8:30 remaining in the first quarter.

Torps ensuing kick was fielded at the 11-yard line by Dylan Dillard and advanced to the 31-yard line. A. Dillard took the hand-off from Jake McCollum on first down and gained 4-yards before the stop. On second down D. Dillard rushed over left tackle for an additional 4-yards gain setting up third down and 2-yards at the 39-yard line. Sticking with D. Dillard as the carrier the Lion's advanced to mid-field for another set of downs. Continuing with the running game and the services of the Dillard brother's the Lion's moved the ball to Ragland's 44-yard line where they faced fourth down and 2-yards. Corey Stewart got the call to carry on fourth down and advanced around the right end. Following measurement by the officials the Devil's held the Lion's just inches short of the first down marker to turn the ball over on downs.

The momentum of the home-team continued to grow as on first down the ball was moved to the Lion's 38-yard line following penalty yardage against the Lion's for a personal foul. The running game for the Purple Devil's continued to gain yardage as Joseph Wilson, N. Daniels and John Brewster moved the ball inside the Lion red zone. Facing first down at the Lion's 7-yard line John Brewster on a keeper was stopped after a 2-yard gain by A. Dillard and O'Mary. Second down brought John Brewster with another rushing attack but Wade Tidwell and Ellis were able to stop him just short of the goal line to set up first down at the 1-yard line. Wilson powered his way into the end zone on the next snap and following the PAT kick by Torps the score stood 14-0 with 27.4 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

A. Dillard fielded the high kick from Torp at the 1-yard line advancing to the 29-yard line where Gregory Karr and a host of Purple Devil's made the stop. First down brought penalty flags for off-sides moving the ball up-field to the 34-yard line. Facing first down and 5-yards, Dillon Tucker got the call to carry rushing straight up the middle to the 42-yard line for another first down as the quarter came to a close. A. Dillard continued the rushing attack up the middle gaining 3-yards on first down. On second down D. Dillard took the hand-off and was met immediately in the back field by Colton Echols and Sidney Bearden for a 1-yard loss. Third down brought A. Dillard up the middle again with a burst of energy reaching the Purple Devil's 40-yard line. With a new set of downs, set backs continued for the Lion's as they were penalized for a false start and moved back to the 45-yard line. First down brought D. Tucker with the carry but he was stopped at the line of scrimmage setting up second down and 15-yards at the 45-yard line. McCollum went to the air attack and connected with D. Dillard on a short pass with Dillard advancing to the Devil's 36-yard line before being tackled by Wilson. Facing third down and 6-yards, A. Dillard took the hand-off and rushed up the middle where Wilson again made the stop setting up forth down and 2-yards for the Lion's. A. Dillard got the call to carry the ball again and advanced over right tackle to the 27-yard line where John Brewster and Lindsey Bothwell made the saving stop. Following the play Ragland was penalized for a face mask penalty moving the ball into the Ragland red zone. First down brought D. Tucker with the rush over the right side of the line of scrimmage for a 6-yard gain. On second down, D. Dillard moved the ball to the 2-yard line with a carry over right tackle. Facing third down and 1-yard, D. Tucker advanced up the middle and following measurement the Lions were facing first down and goal just inside the 1-yard line. On first down the Purple Devil's were penalized for lining up in the neutral zone moving the ball closer to the goal. With the replay of down came the same result. The Devil's were penalized again for lining up in the neutral zone placing the ball just short of the goal line. McCollum on a keeper crossed the goal line for the touchdown. Following the PAT kick by A. Dillard the Lion's had seven points on the scoreboard with 5:43 remaining in the first half of play.

The ensuing kick from A. Dillard was fielded and fumbled by Brock with O'Mary on the spot to recover for the Lion's at the Purple Devil's 44-yard line giving the Lion's excellent field position with time winding down in the first half of play. First down brought another penalty against the Purple Devil's for an off-sides infraction. On the replay of downs, D. Tucker took the hand-off from McCollum and was stopped immediately at the line of scrimmage. Second down brought A. Dillard around the right side of the line of scrimmage where he was chased down for the stop near the 34-yard line. Following measurement by the officials the Lion's found themselves facing third down and inches. McCollum with a keeper advanced the ball to the 30-yard line giving the Lion's another possession of downs. An eight yard gain on first down by D. Dillard inched the Lion's closer to the goal line and on second down, A. Dillard moved the ball to the 20-yard line giving the Lion's another first down. Sticking with the rushing attack, A. Dillard took the hand-off and advanced around the right side reaching the 14-yard line before the stop could be made by Wilson, JohnMark Mintz and a host of angry defenders. Facing second down and 3-yards, D. Tucker took the ball up the middle to the 9-yard line where he was met for the stop by John Brewster, Brock and others. Facing first down and goal, A. Dillard got the call to carry and advanced around the right end to the 5-yard line where he was held out of the end zone by a host of defenders. Second down brought D. Dillard with the rush up the middle for a 3-yard gain setting up third down and goal at the 2-yard line. A. Dillard took the hand-off and rushed up the middle over left guard but was met just short of the goal line by Sidney Bearden setting up fourth down. Following the play the Lion's called for a time-out. With 1.7 seconds remaining in the first half, A. Dillard was brought down near the goal line but held out of the end zone by Wilson and a host of defenders as time expired on the half. The Purple Devil's headed to the locker room with momentum and a seven point lead.

Following the half-time break the Purple Devil's received the kick from A. Dillard at the 7-yard line and advanced to their own 20-yard line where Aldridge, Landon Miller and W. Tidwell made the stop. The Lion defense held on the first possession following the half-time break. Following a strong defensive stand with A. Dillard making the stop in the backfield on third down, the Devil's found themselves facing fourth down and 8-yards from their own 33-yard line. Torp was called on field to punt the ball away with the ball rolling dead at the Lion 37-yard line.

Austin Thornton made the stop on D. Dillard on first down setting up second down and 9-yards for the Lion's. A. Dillard rushed up the middle on second down and was met by Thornton for the stop after a 3-yard gain. Facing third down and 6-yards, McCollum went to the air attack and attempted to connect with Aldridge but the ball fell incomplete setting up fourth down. O'Mary lined-up to punt the ball away but the kick was faked and McCollum passed the ball to D. Dillard for the completion with a new set of downs at the Devil's 33-yard line. D. Tucker took the hand-off on first down and scampered up the middle for a 3-yard gain. Second down brought D. Dillard around the left side of the line of scrimmage for a 6-yard gain. D. Tucker with the carry on third down was met near the line of scrimmage by Bearden and a host of defenders for the stop. Following measurement the Lion's were facing fourth down and inches. D. Dillard got the call to carry and rushed over the left side of the line of scrimmage to the 22-yard line. Following measurement by officials the Lion's had achieved another first down. A. Dillard rushed the ball over right guard on first down for a 2-yard gain and on second down D. Dillard picked-up an additional 2-yards to bring up third down and 6-yards for the Lion's at the 18-yard line. D. Dillard took the hand-off and scrambled around the left side lines where he was met by Wilson for the stop just beyond the 14-yard line. Facing fourth down and 2-yards, D. Dillard was called upon once again to gain the needed yardage. He took the hand-off and followed his blockers around the left side of the line of scrimmage reaching the 11-yard line before being forced out of bounds. With a new set of downs inside the red zone, D. Dillard lined up in the back field and attempted to connect thru the air with McCollum who raced to the end zone but the pass was incomplete. On second down, D. Tucker rushed over right tackle for a 4-yard gain before being stopped by Bearden. Third down brought D. Dillard with the rushing attack around the left end but Thornton was there for the stop setting up fourth down and 5-yards from the Devil's 6-yard line. The Lion's elected to attempt a 22-yard field goal with McCollum holding for A. Dillard. The hold was perfect as was the kick and the Lion's added another three points to their score with 58.4 seconds remaining in the third quarter.

Aldridge made the stop on the kick-off with the Purple Devil offensive front lining up at their own 43-yard line. First down brought a rushing attack from Daniels up the middle but Miller made the tackle after a 3-yard gain. On second down John Brewster took the hand-off and rushed up the middle where D. Dillard and a host of Lion defenders made the stop at the Lion 38-yard line as the quarter of play ended. Brewster was the man to call upon for the Devil's during this possession and just four plays into the fourth quarter, with John Brewster the ball carrier on all four plays, the Purple Devil's had built their lead following John Brewster's 2-yard rushing attack up the middle. The PAT kick by Torp was perfect and the score stood 21-10 with 10:10 remaining in the game.

Torp's ensuing kick sailed deep into the back of the end zone to set up the Lion offensive drive from their own 20-yard line. A. Dillard picked up 5-yards on first down. On second down, D. Dillard gained 3-yards around the left side of the line of scrimmage to set up third down and 2-yards at the 28-yard line. D. Tucker was called on to gain the needed yardage and he did just that with a burst up the middle to the 34-yard line where Bothwell and a host of Devil's brought him down. First down brought D. Dillard with the carry but he was met in the backfield by Wilsonand Thornton for a 3-yard loss. On second down, A. Dillard took the hand off and rambled his way around the right side of the line but following the play the Lion's were penalized for holding moving the ball back to the 20-yard line. Facing second down and 24-yards, McCollum attempted a pass connection with Aldridge but the ball over sailed out of bounds. On third down, McCollum connected with D. Tucker thru the air and following the play the Devil's were penalized for roughing the passer to set the Lion's up with a first down at their own 40-yard line. First down brought A. Dillard with the carry but he was met in the backfield for no gain. D. Tucker got the call to carry on second down and scrambled his way up the middle to the Devil's 32-yard line with Brock chasing him down to make the stop and save the touchdown. With a new set of downs, A. Dillard was called upon to advance the ball rushing around the left side with the ball coming loose and what appeared to be a set-back for the Lions as it appeared the fumble was recovered by the Purple Devil's. Officials ruled in favor of the Lion's and spotted the ball at the Devil's 27-yard line following yardage stepped off for a personal foul on the play. Facing first down and 13-yards, D. Tucker advanced up the middle to the 10-yard line where he was stopped by Echols and a host of angry defenders. Second down brought D. Dillard with the rushing attack where he was ruled down just short of the goal line setting up first down for the Lion's. Determined to score, D. Dillard took the ball into the end zone untouched and with 4:20 remaining in the game the Lions were still fighting for a victory. Electing to attempt a two point conversion, McCollum's pass to A. Dillard fell short just out-side of the goal line and the score stood at 21-16 in favor of the Purple Devil's.

A. Dillard's onside kick attempt was recovered by Echols at mid-field. On first down the Devil's punched the ball on down field with Daniels rushing to the 31-yard line before O'Mary and Miller could make the stop. With a new set of downs, Daniels continued rushing for the Devil's with Stewart making the stop after a 1-yard gain. Second down brought a pass attempt from Arnold to Brock but pressure from D. Tucker and coverage by McCollum forced the ball to be overthrown setting up third down. John Brewster got the call to carry on third but Ellis and D. Tucker made the stop to set up fourth down and 2-yards. The Purple Devil's didn't desire to give the Lion offense another opportunity with the ball so they elected to go for the yardage on fourth down. Daniels took the hand-off and reached the 21-yard line gaining just enough yardage to hold the possession for the Purple Devils as time was quickly winding down. First down brought John Brewster with the carry around the left side of the line of scrimmage but O'Mary, W. Tidwell and Ellis were there for the stop after a 2-yard gain. Sticking with John Brewster on the rushing attack the Devil's advanced to the 6-yard line where Stewart and A. Dillard made the tackle. Facing first down and goal, Arnold took a knee with the snap of the ball. On second down Arnold once again took a knee and in a show of sportsmanship, third down brought Arnold to his knee again as time expired. The victorious Purple Devil's advanced to the next round of the 1A play-offs with a home standing victory over the Lion's by a score of 21-16. The Lion's end the season with a 7-4 record.
