Hubbertville hosted the Wildcats of Tharptown in a preseason jamboree on Friday night.  The game proved to be a benefit for the Lion team as Head Coach Lamar Harris found himself testing players at positions which they had never played.  Several of his starters for the game had never dressed on the varsity squad and some had never been a starter for the Lion team.  This year Coach Harris will be relying on his younger players as he only has one returning senior who was a starter from last years team.  Of the five senior players on the roster for this year, all five saw action on Friday night and as the season progresses those players are going to have to step up to the plate and be leaders for this young team.
The Lions received the opening kick off with Aaron Dillard, Jordan White and Corey Stewart lined up deep for the receiving kick.  The Wildcat kicker faulted the kick with the ball spinning off the kicking tee and advancing to the Wildcat 41-yard line giving the Lions an early opportunity with excellent field possession.  Dillard lined up at quarterback and took the snap advancing untouched to the end zone for the early score.  Dillard kicked the extra point and the Lions had the early lead with only minutes erased from the game clock.
The Wildcats wasted little time answering the scoring drive by the Lions by setting up a drive of their own.  Facing fourth down and one at the Lion 27-yard line, the Wildcat Quarterback connected with his receiver to set up first and goal at the Lion 3 yard line.  Taylor  Oden made the stop on first down near the goal line, but on second down the Wildcat quarterback with a keeper advanced to the end zone  After the PAT kick the Lions remained in the lead by a score of 7-6 with 7:56 remaining in the first quarter.
Dillard fielded the ensuing kick at the 18-yard line advancing to the Lion 40-yard line.  Four plays later the Lions were knocking on the goal line again.  Facing first and goal at the 6-yard line, Corey Stewart took the hand-off and rushed around the left side for the score.  On the PAT attempt Dillard's kick sailed off to the right of the goal with the score remaining in favor of the Lions at 13-6.
The first quarter came to a close as the Wildcats were driving deep into Lion territory.  The Wildcat quarterback recovered his own fumble at the 6-yard line bringing up third down and goal.  David Aldridge met the ball carrier forcing a fumble near the goal line but once again the Wildcats recovered the ball setting up fourth down and goal at the 1-yard line.  Advancing over left guard the Wildcats were on the score board again.  With a perfect kick the game was tied.  Following an exchange of penalties by both teams and rushing carries by O'Mary, Stewart and Dillard the Lions advanced down field to the Wildcat 6-yard line where O'Mary took the hand-off to the end zone for the score.  Dillard's kick on the PAT attempt sailed right leaving the score 19-13 with little time remaining in the first half of play.
O'Mary's ensuing kick rolled out of bounds at the Wildcat 37-yard line.  Facing second down and one, Sam Key burst across the line to sack the  Wildcat quarterback for 5-yard loss.  Regrouping after the sack, the Wildcats continued their drive and advanced down field using their passing attack advancing the ball inside the Lion red zone with a pass over the middle, setting up first down and goal at the Lion 2-yard line.  With a quarterback keeper the Wildcats brought the score to a tie once again with 33.7 seconds remaining in the first half of play.  Following the PAT attempt the game remained tied as the kick was unsuccessful.
The Tharptown coaching staff wasn't giving up on the first half of play, they lined up and attempted to catch the Lions off guard by kicking an on-sides kick, which was recovered by the Wildcats at midfield.  On first down Blayke Hill rushed into the backfield sacking the quarterback for a 6-yard loss.  With time running down on the first half the Wildcats went to the air attack but the move was unsuccessful as Dillard recovered a fumbled ball as time expired on the half.
Following the half time break the Wildcats received the opening kick advancing out to the 39-yard line to start the second half of play.  On first down Devin Watkins flushed the Wildcat quarterback out of the pocket where Watkins, O'Mary and a host of Lions made the tackle for a three yard loss.  On second down Tharptown reached the original line of scrimmage with a scramble by the quarterback before Landon Miller and O'Mary made the stop for the Lions.  Following back to back penalties the Wildcats were facing third down and 20 from their own 29 yard line.  The coaching staff elected to go deep with a pass which was successful as the Wildcats advanced to the Lion red-zone at the 3-yard line.  First down brought another rushing attempt but O'Mary made the stop at the line of scrimmage.  On a quarterback  keeper the Wildcats advanced to the 1-yard line where Miller made the stop just short of the goal line.  Facing third down and goal, once again the Wildcats went for a quarterback keeper up the middle but O'Mary and Blayke Hill was there for the stop at the one yard line.  Fourth down brought misery for the Wildcats as they attempted a pitch-out but Dillard and Jordan Wyma was on the spot making the stop near the 5-yard line where the Lions took over possession on downs.
Following an offside penalty against the Wildcats, the Lions had a first down at their own 40-yard line.  O'Mary took the hand-off and scampered his way up the middle to the 43-yard line.  Facing second down and short yardage, Dillard called his own number and muscled his way across midfield to the Wildcat 31-yard line for another set of downs.  On first down, Dillard went to the passing attack connecting with Corey Stewart near the goal line with Stewart advancing to the end zone to add six more points for the Lions.  The PAT kick by Dillard was right down the middle of the uprights and the Lions were back in the lead 25-19 with 3:35 remaining in the third quarter of play.
Miller's kick was advanced from the 31-yard line to the Wildcats 38-yard line where Wyma and Stewart made the stop.  On first down the Cats connected with a pass advancing across midfield to the Lion 36-yard line before Wyma made the saving stop for the Lions.  The Wildcats kept their momentum alive and advanced deep in Lion territory with the passing attack setting up first down at the 17-yard line.  Sticking with the passing attack they found the end zone two plays later.  The PAT kick was no good and with 23.3 seconds remaining in the quarter the Lions held the slim lead 26-25.
Back to receive the ensuing kick was Jordan White, Dillard and Stewart.  White bobbled the ball and fumbled with the Wildcats recovering at the Lion 28-yard line.  On first down the Wildcat quarterback was brought down at the line of scrimmage by White and Dillard for no gain as time expired on the third quarter.    Once again the Wildcat quarterback called his own number and rushed to the outside but David Aldridge was in position and made the saving stop at the 12-yard line.  Reverting back to the inside rushing attack, the Wildcat ball carrier couldn't handle the ball fumbling it away with Miller recovering for the Lions at their own 11-yard line.  Dillard picked up five yards on first down and Stewart raced around the end on second down giving the Lions a new set of downs at the 25-yard line.  Following rushing attacks by Dillard and O'Mary the Lions were facing second down and ten at the Wildcat 36-yard line.  Stewart got the call and advanced to the right side gaining 6-yards before being forced out of bounds.  Following a penalty for off-sides against the Wildcats, the Lions were just inside the 25-yard line with another set of downs.  Stewart got the call to carry again and advanced deep to the 7-yard line before being brought down.  O'Mary finished the drive by rushing over right guard to the end zone with 6:45 remaining in the game.  The PAT kick by Dillard was perfect and the Lions built their lead 33-25.
The ensuing kick was received at the 35-yard line and advanced up field to the Wildcat 45-yard line before Miller could make the stop.  On first down, the Wildcats assured the Lions that they still had fight left and with the snap of the ball the Wildcat quarterback raced up the middle fighting off would be tacklers and reaching the end zone with only seconds removed from the game clock.  The Wildcats elected to go for the two point conversion on the PAT attempt but the ball was fumbled on the snap in the backfield.  Although the ball was fumbled the quarterback recovered the loose ball and attempted a quick pass connection but pressure from the Lions resulted in the ball being overthrown.
The ensuing kick was booted deep to the 24-yard line with White covering the ball as it rolled to a dead stop.  On first down, Dillard called his own number and advanced for two yards.  Second down brought O'Mary but the Wildcats defense held their ground refusing any additional yardage.  On third down, Dillard attempted a pass to Devin Watkins but the ball was knocked away just before the completion setting up fourth down and eight for the Lions.  The Lion coaching staff sent O'Mary to the backfield to punt the ball away with the Wildcats player making the reception at their own 41-yard line.  After the reception return the Wildcats found themselves lined up at their own 46-yard line following penalties.  First down brought the passing attack with the ball advancing across midfield to the Lion 33-yard line where David Aldridge made the stop.  O'Mary made the stop after a 1-yard gain setting up second down and 9 for the Cats.  Dillard burst across the line of scrimmage making the sack on the quarterback at the 43-yard line, putting the Wildcats in a third down and long position.  The pass behind the line of scrimmage wasn't completed on third down, leaving the Cats in a dire need for yardage facing fourth down and 20.  Once again the Wildcats went deep with a passing attempt but the ball was overthrown with the Lions taking over on downs at the 43-yard line.
The Lion offensive front returned to the field and wisely used the time remaining on the clock to their advantage with Dillard taking a knee on the last three snaps to bring the game to a close.  With time expiring the Lions walked off the field with a hard fought victory of the visiting Wildcats by a score of 33-31.
The Lions will open their regular season play by hosting the Phillips High Bears on Friday night at Wiley Hollingsworth Stadium.  Game time is 7pm.
