Welcoming a cat of a different kind to Wiley Hollingsworth Stadium, on Friday night the Lions hosted the Brilliant Tigers in another Region 5 match-up.  The long standing rivalry between the two teams brought a large crowd to the stadium.  Following standard pre-game ceremonies a ceremony to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Sep 11 attack on America and the start of the war on terrorism was conducted with the Lion Pride Band performing the National Anthem as the Varsity Cheerleaders assisted in the flag raising ceremony.
The Lions won the coin toss and elected to receive the opening kick from the Tigers.  Chance Keys kick was fielded by Jordan White with a diving catch at the 20-yard line.  After a rushing carry by Corey Stewart gained 3-yards, Aaron Dillard rushed around the left side of the line of scrimmage following blockers to the Tiger 20-yard line where he was brought down from behind by Kameron Smith to save the touchdown.  Two plays later Dillard crossed the goal line untouched for the score and the Lions had an early lead with 9:52 on the game clock.  On the PAT kick Dillard booted the ball straight thru the uprights and the score stood 7-0 in favor of the Lions.
Brilliant started their offensive pursuit at their own 38-yard line and two plays later crossed into Lion territory with a first down at the Lion 38-yard line.  Swapping out carries with Dylan Cotton and Smith the Tigers advanced closer to the goal.  Facing second down and 10 from the 26-yard line, Hunter O'Mary made the saving stop on Cotton at the 15-yard line.  Four plays later the Tigers couldn't be stopped as Smith broke away from would be tacklers advancing for the score with 3:36 remaining in the first quarter.  Following a time out, the Tigers attempted a two point conversion but O'Mary stepped up and made the initial contact followed by a host of Lion defenders to make the stop on Cotton short of the goal line.  The Lions held the slim lead by one point.
The ensuing kick brought misery for the Brilliant coaching staff and kicking team as the Tigers were penalized for an off-sides infraction setting the Lions up at their own 32-yard line.  Dillard and the Hub offensive front returned to the field an immediately moved the ball down field.  On first down Dillard connected with David Aldridge with Aldridge advancing deep into Brilliants red zone before being brought down from behind by Adam Martin.  The Tiger defensive front held on the first two downs forcing Hubbertville to revert to the passing game.  Facing third down at the 11-yard line, Dillard connected with O'Mary on the sweep pass but the Tigers were ready with Martin making the stop at the 10-yard line.  Dillard lined up to attempt a field goal on fourth down but the kick sailed right so the Tiger defense held their stand forcing the ball over on downs at the 20-yard line.
The first quarter came to a close with the Tigers facing third down and 4-yards at their own 26-yard line.  Big defensive stands by Devin Watkins, Blayke Hill, Dakota Dozier and O'Mary pushed the Tigers back deep and facing fourth down and 17, Cotton punted the ball back to the Lions.
Corey Stewart made the punt reception at the Lion 40-yard line and was brought down by a host of Tigers after a 3-yard return.  Dillard wasted little time finding the end zone.  With the snap of the ball he rushed around the right side of the line of scrimmage, cutting back across field and followed the left side line to the end zone for another quick six for the Lions.  His kick on the PAT was perfect and with 8:51 remaining in the half the Lions were building their lead 14-6.
Jeremy Davis signaled for the fair catch on the ensuing kick and the Tigers offense lined up at their own 37-yard line.  On first down Devin Watkins and Jordan Wyma burst across the line to bring Fabian Garcia down for the sack and an 8-yard loss.  Cotton managed two yards on second down but Wyma was there for the stop again to bring up third down and 16 for the Tigers.  Garcia reverted to the air and connected with Chance Key with Dillard and Stewart on the stop for the Lions at the 45-yard line.  Facing fourth down and 2-yards, Cotton took the hand-off and advanced up the middle for the first down at the Lion 48-yard line.  Behind the offensive efforts of Martin and Cotton, Brilliant advanced down field using clock and moving inside the Lion red zone to the 17-yard line.  Watkins and O'Mary made the stop on Martin for a 1-yard loss on first down and on second down Dillard broke across the line untouched to bring Cotton down in the backfield for an additional yardage loss.  Facing third down the Tigers reverted to the passing attack and Landon Miller deflected the pass at the line of scrimmage to set up fourth down and 14-yards for the Tiger offense.  Following a time-out, Key lined up to attempt a field goal but faked the kick and was brought down hard in the back field by Miller.  The Tigers were penalized for illegal procedure and the ball was turned over on downs to the Lions at the 20-yard line with time running down on the first half of play.
The Lion offense advanced the ball across mid-field into Tiger territory but time wasn't with them as the half came to an end with Stewart advanced around the right side and out of bounds at the 37-yard line.
To start the second half of play Hubbertville's offense started at the Brilliant 47-yard line following a penalty against the Lions forcing an re-kick. On the re-kick the ball took a backwards bounce with Wyma on the recover for the Lions setting up excellent field position.  Stewart, O'Mary and Dillard advanced the ball to the Tiger 28-yard line where the Lions faced fourth down and 2-yards.  Dillard attempted to keep the drive alive with a keeper up the middle but following measurement the Tigers took over on downs close to the 26-yard line.  Cotton as the ball carrier the Tigers advanced up field to the Lion 44-yard line.  On first down Calan Robertson made a big stop on Cotton for the Lions at the line of scrimmage resulting in a 1-yard loss.  Second down brought Cotton with the carry again around the right side of the line of scrimmage with Stewart on the stop for no gain.  The Lion offensive front continued the hold on third down as Smith was met at the line of scrimmage by O'Mary, Wyma and Devin Marcum for the stop.  Facing fourth down and 10-yards, the Tigers elected to go for the needed yardage.  Garcia's pass over the middle was broken up by White turning the ball over to the Lions on downs at the 44-yard line.
First down brought more misery for the Tigers as they were penalized for an off-sides violation.  On second down Dillard went deep with a pass intended for Aldridge but the ball was just out of Aldridges reach and incomplete near the Lion bench.  On second down, O'Mary exploded to the Tiger 44-yard line before a host of Tigers made the saving stop.  A penalty against the Lions for illegal procedure moved the ball to the Tiger 49-yard line setting up first down and 15-yards.  Dillard was met at the line of scrimmage for the stop on first down.  On second down, Dillard threw the screen pass out to O'Mary and he jolted down field rambling untouched along the left side line to the end zone for the score.  The PAT kick, Dillard with Aldridge holding was right down the middle of the uprights and with 1:57 showing on the clock the Lions extended their lead 21-6.
Millers ensuing kick was signaled fair catch by Davis at the 37-yard line setting the Brilliant offense up for another attempt.  On first down Garcia attempted a pass to Smith but Aldridge was on the spot for the Lions forcing an incompletion.  Cotton broke thru the line of scrimmage on second down and Stewart made the stop at the Lion 30-yard line containing the score from the Tigers.  Smith was met behind the line of scrimmage by Stewart on second down for a 4-yard loss and Cotton was brought down by Watkins and Dillard to bring up third down and 13-yards as the 3rd quarter came to a close.  Garcia connected with Sawyer Nelson on third down moving the ball to the Lion 20-yard line.  Martin rushed up the middle with Marcum making a huge stop for the Lions to bring up second down and 10.  On second down Cotton picked up the needed yardage by sweeping around the left side lines to the 10-yard line.  Smith advanced 3-yards before being knocked out of bounds by Stewart at the 7-yard line.  Second down brought Garcia connecting with Smith in the backfield but O'Mary was there for the stop after a 1-yard gain.  Facing third down and goal at the 6-yard line, Cotton took the hand-off and was met by Marcum, Wyma and Watkins after a 2-yard gain.  On fourth down, Smith was met at the line of scrimmage by Marcum,  Dillard and a host of determined defenders for the stop turning the ball over on downs to the Lions at their own 5-yard line.
O'Mary rushed up the middle over left guard for a 1-yard gain on first down.  On second down, Stewart took the hand-off from Dillard and raced around the left side of the line of scrimmage advancing down the left side line to the Tiger 34-yard line before being chased down to save the touchdown by Garcia.  Dillard advanced 5-yards on the first down and Stewart made a saving recovery on second down as the ball was fumbled on the exchange.  Facing third down and 7, Dillard rumbled his way over left guard to the 19-yard line setting the Lions up for another set of downs.  O'Mary advanced 6-yards on first down and Dillard took the ball to the end zone on second down for a 13-yard rushing touchdown.  The PAT kick by Dillard was perfect and with 5:24 remaining in the game the Lions were on top 28-6.
The Tigers kick team woes continued as the ensuing kick by O'Mary took a high bounce and sailed in and out of the hands of the Tiger player with White recovering the loose ball for the Lions.  Setting up at the Lion 46-yard line, O'Mary was held by the Tigers after a 1-yard gain.  Sticking with O'Mary as the ball carrier, the Tigers held again after a 1-yard gain.  Facing third down and 8, Stewart took the hand-off and rushed around the right side of the line of scrimmage but Key and Cotton made the stop at the Tiger 49-yard line to force the Lions to punt the ball away.  O'Mary's punt sailed high and deep with Garcia fielding the ball at the 16-yard line and White making the tackle for the Lions at the 22-yard line.
The Lions were penalized on first down for off-sides.  Garcia attempted a pass to Martin with the snap of the ball but the pass was broken up by Dillard to bring up second down and 5 at the 27-yard line.  Cotton was met at the 31-yard line by Hill and Dillard for the stop and on third down Cotton again got the call to advance the ball moving it to the 33-yard line giving the Tigers another set of downs.  Dozier made the stop for the Lions on first down after Garcia gained 2-yards.  Dozier was there for the stop on second down making the stop on Martin after a 3-yard gain.  Facing third down and 5 at their own 38, Marcum and Miller fought their way into the backfield sacking Garcia for a 3-yard loss.  Facing fourth down and 8 and time ticking off the game clock, the Brilliant coaching staff elected to go for the needed yardage on fourth down but Garcia's pass was picked off by Wyma and returned to the 26-yard line giving the Lions security for the win.  Showing sportsmanship Dillard ran the clock out by taking a knee on the next snaps securing the victory for the homestanding Lions.  The Lions will host regional foe Marion County on Friday night.  Game time is 7pm.
Comments from Coach Harris:
"Our guys played really hard tonight.  The game was very physical from the starting point. Brilliant brought things to the field tonight that our players hadn't seen at this point in the season.  That took a while for the young guys to adjust.  They kept the ball away from us and that is something that we usually attempt to do.  They had several big plays where we couldn't contain them allowing their offense to make first downs.  I think the turning point of the game came in the second half when we had the big goal line stand and moved the ball down field for another score to go ahead 28-6 and sort of put the game out of reach with the time remaining.  Overall I'm pleased with the effort tonight and proud of both teams for the effort and sportsmanship on the field."
