Junior Lion's Handed First Defeat of Season

The Lion Junior Team welcomed the Phillips Junior Bears to Wiley Hollingsworth Stadium on Monday night, September, 26, 2011.  The Bears opening the game by kicking to the Lions with Nathan Young making the reception at the 32-yard line and advancing to the Bear 37-yard line before being brought down for the stop. Quarterback Austin Palmer brought the Lion offensive unit to the line and on first down connected on the passing attack with Dax Benton who gained 4-yards on the play.  On second down, A. Palmer handed the ball off to Young who scrambled around the right side line to gain the first down to give the Lions another set of downs.  A. Palmer called his own number on first down advancing to the left side of the line of scrimmage for another first down at the Bear 16-yard line.  D. Benton took the ball around the right side for a 7-yard gain to bring up second down and 3-yards at the Bear 9-yard line.  A. Palmer dropped back with the snap of the ball and connected thru the air to D. Benton near the line of scrimmage with Benton taking the ball in for the first score of the evening. With 5:44 showing on the game clock in the opening quarter the Lions had the lead 6-0. On the PAT, Gabe Stidham lined up to kick the ball but a bad snap forced him to cover the ball deep in the backfield.

McCain Hubbert booted the ensuing kick deep down field to the 16-yard line where the Bear receiver brought the ball up field.  The Bears' receiver made the stumbling catch at the 16-yard line where their offensive set up for their first possession of the evening.  The ball was moved back to the 11-yard line after a penalty was called on the Bears for having to many players on the field on first down.  Following the penalty the Bears were facing first down and 15-yards.  On first down Young chased down the ball carrier at the Lion 44-yard line to save the early touchdown.  First down brought Kris Parson and M. Hubbert bursting their way into the back field for a sack on the Bear signal caller.  Facing second down and 11-yards, the Bears went to the air and connected for a 9-yard gain before A. Palmer made the stop.  After an infraction by the Bears for illegal procedure, the quarterback connected again thru the air for what appeared to be another first down but the Bears were once again penalized moving the ball to the 49-yard line bringing up third down and 17-yards. Sticking with the passing attack the Bears moved the ball to the Lion 46-yard line where G. Stidham made the tackle to bring up fourth down.  Deciding to go for the 11-yards needed on fourth down, the Bear's quarterback went deep to connect with another receiver advancing to the Lion 33-yard line where Kamron Smith made the tackle.  Sticking with the passing game, the Bears continued moving down field with K. Smith and Mason Drummond making stops for the Lions.  Facing first down at the 10-yard line the Bears were knocking on the Lions door.  The Lion defense held on the first three downs with Caleb Palmer and A. Palmer making the stop on the Bears quarterback on first down.  Second down and 7-yards brought the passing attack once again but the ball fell incomplete in the end zone.  Stidham met the signal caller head on for the stop on third down after a 3-yard gain.  Facing fourth down and 4-yards, the Bears went to a reverse play with the ball carrier reaching the end zone for the score.  With 30.4 seconds remaining in the first quarter the Bears were on the board.  On the PAT, D. Benton and K. Parson rushed into the backfield making the tackle on the quarterback to leave the score standing at a tie 6-6.

G. Stidham fielded the ensuing kick at the 27-yard line and raced across midfield to the Bears 44-yard line where he was knocked out of bounds to save the kickoff return touchdown run.  The Lion offense ran into trouble early on the possession after Young was brought down in the backfield on first down for a 7-yard loss as the quarter came to a close.  Facing second down and 17-yards, the ball was moved further back after the Lions were penalized for an illegal procedure. With the snap of the ball, A. Palmer was brought down in the backfield for an additional 2-yard loss to set up third down and 25-yards for the offense.  A. Palmer went deep with a pass attempting to gain back some of the yardage but his pass was intercepted by the Bear defender who advanced back up field to the Bears 43-yard line. First down brought C. Palmer and a host of defenders with a stop for the Lions after a 3-yard gain.  The passing attack caught the Lions off guard again and after a pass completion M. Drummond made the stop at the Lion 41-yard line.  With a keeper the quarterback advanced around the right side of the line of scrimmage where Parson and M. Hubbert made the stop for a 2-yard loss. On second down, Young was on cover breaking up a passing attempt to set up third down and 12-yards.  The Bears were penalized for illegal procedure to move the ball back 5-yards but with the snap of the ball the Bear quarterback connected with his receiver with G. Stidham on the stop at the 39-yard line.  Facing fourth down and 8-yards, the quarterback reverted to the opposite side of the field and connected for another set of downs before Young could make the stop.  On first down the Lions jumped off sides moving the ball deeper for the Bears.  Jacob Stovall burst thru the line of scrimmage untouched and sacked the quarterback for a 3-yard loss to bring up second down and 8-yards at the 20-yard line.  Drummond was on coverage for the next passing attempt breaking up the pass on the play.  Third down brought a pass in the backfield with the receiver weaving his way untouched into the end zone for the second Bear touchdown of the evening with 2:05 remaining in the first half of play.  The PAT two point conversion was successful with the pass connection in the end zone leaving the score 14-6 in favor of the visiting Bears.

The ensuing on-sides kick rolled dead at the Bears 47-yard line setting the Lions up with good field position.  On first down A. Palmer with a keeper scrambled to the 44-yard line fighting off would be tacklers.  Facing second down and 8-yards, A. Palmer called his own number again and managed a 3-yard gain before being tackled setting up third down and 5-yards.  Third down brought A. Palmer with a passing attempt to D. Benton but the ball fell to the ground setting up fourth down.  M. Hubbert lined up in the backfield to punt the ball away but the Lions faked the punt with an intent to throw a pass to G. Stidham but the ball was thrown too low for the catch, falling incomplete and turning the ball over to the Bears at their own 40-yard line.  The Bears attempted the reverse on first down but fumbled the ball with Parsons on the recovery for the Lions at the 21-yard line. D. Benton took the hand-off on first down and rambled just shy of the 11-yard line setting up second down and 1-yard for the Lions with only 30.8 seconds remaining in the first half of play. A. Palmer was forced to throw the pass early with pressure on second down to bring up third down.  On third down A. Palmer rushed with the carry but fumbled with the Bears recovering as time expired on the half.

M. Hubbert's kick was fielded at the 31-yard line setting up the opening drive of the third quarter for the Bears.  Drummond made the stop on first down at the Bear 45-yard line.  Peyton McDonald and G. Stidham brought the quarterback down after a keeper advancing around the left side for a first down at the 38-yard line.  On first down the Lions were penalized for pass interference moving the Bears to the 24-yard line.  With the snap of the ball the Bears were celebrating their third touchdown of the evening after a pass completion near the line of scrimmage with the receiver advancing untouched into the end zone.  Following the successful two point conversion on the PAT the Bears were building their lead 22-6 with 6:36 showing on the clock.

The Lions started their next offensive drive from their own 40-yard line with A. Palmer racing around the right side lines and out of bounds at midfield.  Young took the hand-off on first down and was forced out of bounds at the Bears 43-yard line.  The Lions lost the ball to the Bears after a bad snap forced a fumble bringing the offensive drive to a halt.

The Bears went right to the passing attack and Justin Hancock intercepted the pass returning the ball to the Bear 40-yard line to give the Lion offense another  opportunity with excellent field position. Two plays later the misery continued for the Lions as the ball was fumbled away to the Bears after a bad snap.

The Bears were penalized on first down for illegal procedure moving the ball to the Lion 46-yard line for the replay of downs.  Sticking with the passing attack the Bears advanced to the 44-yard line with third down and 5-yards.  The quarterback went deep with a passing attempt but the ball fell out of the hands of the receiver setting up fourth down. On fourth down the same results were handed to the Bears as the ball fell incomplete again turning the ball over to the Lions on downs at the Lion 44-yard line.

First down brought A. Palmer with a keeper racing around the left side of the line of scrimmage cutting back across the center of the field to the Bear 40-yard line where he was brought down by a host of angry defenders. D. Benton took the hand off on second down gaining 9-yards before being stopped just short of the first down marker.  On second down A. Palmer attempted a pass to M. Hubbert  but the play was broken up on coverage to set up third down and 1-yard.  A. Palmer got the needed yardage on third down racing around the right side of the line to the 24-yard line before being tackled.  On first down A. Palmer attempted a pass connection with D. Benton but once again the pass was broken up by the Bears defensive player.  A. Palmer called his own number on second down and rushed around the right side of the line of scrimmage but fumbled the ball away to the Bears.

The Bear offensive front lined up at the 2-yard line but was penalized for an illegal procedure moving the ball to the 1-yard line.  Parson made the stop on first down after a 6-yard gain. The Bear quarterback went back to the air and connected with his receiver moving the ball to the 12-yard line for the first down and another set of downs. On first down the Bears were penalized moving the ball back to the 5-yard line.  On the reply of downs, Drummond broke up the intended pass setting up second down and 18-yards for the Bears.  Two plays later Caleb Palmer recovered the lose ball at the Lion 25-yard line after M. Hubbert made the strong hit on the Bear ball carrier.  A. Palmer broke away from would be tacklers on first down picking up 5-yards for the Lions.  On second down, the pass intended for D. The Bears next possession would end short with three downs and out.  Facing fourth down and 7-yards at the 43-yard line the Bears punted the ball away to the Lions with the ball rolling dead at the Lion 25-yard line.  First down brought A. Palmer attempting a pass connection to G. Stidham but the pass was incomplete.  Second down brought another passing attempt, this time to D. Benton but the ball fell from his finger tips.  Facing third down and 10-yards, A. Palmer went back to D. Benton with a pass making the connection with Benton advancing up field to the Lion 48-yard line before being brought down.  Sticking with D. Benton, A. Palmer made the passing connection once again with Benton advancing to the Bears 47-yard line.  With time running down on the game clock, A. Palmer was brought down in the backfield for a 7-yard loss at the Lions 48 yard line. With 15.8 seconds remaining the Lion coaching  staff called a time out to set up the final play.  A.
